$999 Calyx M with DXD + DSD, 64GB + SD + µSD storage - Page 170

Thanks for all the demo impressions, people :happy_face1:    Please keep 'em coming!

Just a couple of things I feel like commenting upon at this point:

1) Thin aluminium can be a concern not just in terms of tactile feeling, but also in terms of resale value of a DAP, because aluminium (if it's too thin) can dent very easily, whereas steel or plastic would be more likely to spring back. I took excellent care of my DX100, and only had it a few weeks, but when I came around to reselling it, there was a noticeable shallow dent in the rear panel. On the DX100, that panel is replaceable (and economical), but this would not be true with the M.

2) Owners of ES9018-variant DAPs (DX100, DX90, etc.) will be familiar with the fact that the subjective SQ can change quite substantially depending on firmware tweaks. We all know that D&A staff watch this thread (and other forums, around the globe), so it will be interesting to see if they make any alterations to the SQ in the version 1.0 retail release firmware, in response to criticisms expressed by those who have listened to the alpha demo.

Much of the X5's warm signature is attributable to the amp section. The line out is very good. No doubt it is thicker than the DX50 line out. It is also better.

I see, thanks for the heads up.

Though honestly I prefer my IEM to be used direct instead of using an additional amp.

I don't know how much they can push it but if they keep this signature, it's going to be a minus for it. Some people said that the DX90 is somewhat neutral, I don't agree I still feel it has a slight tendency of bass boost however I have to say that detail wise, it's very good. If it wasn't of the hefty AK240 price, it would have sounded more attractive to me. Now if the retail version, sound wise, isn't any different from what people have reported, the X7 is the only hope. It really feels we are reaching the law of diminishing return or more like small incremental improvement.

No I was not spared at all. Mine was shipped a couple of weeks later than expected. I never realized then they are shipping all Roxanne (CF or Acrylic) with a CF case (pointless for acrylic, imo.) They never told me about it or anything at all when I asked what is causing the delay  until a fellow head-fier mentioned it in the Roxanne thread, I asked JH to ship my order with the round metal case instead. Otherwise, I would have waited several weeks or moths just waiting for the CF case.

That is the holy grail. I am stilt looking for a DAP that I really enjoy without an external amp (and which doesn't sound so much better when routed through the Pico Power).

DX90 for sure did just that compared to DX50. At least for my UHA-6SMKII.

I tend to agree, I paired the DX90 and the Pico power and it's a good combo but really who needs an amp with it? Tbh I did not see a night and day improvement with the amp.

I'd say when the USB dac function will be enabled, if you at looking for an everything dap, it might well be what you are looking for. I am still looking for a dap with a better UI and a killer SQ and still be portable, I might be asking for the impossible (at a reasonable price that is). Who knows we might be getting there.

Very interesting observations...!

I want to see them port Rockbox to the DX90 like they did with the DX50 and then it may be impossible to resist.  :-)

Perhaps if there are enough interest each one can contribute and buy one for xczz so he can port RB as soon as he can :)

kkcc, do you find the M at 901 level or not? If not I will not even bother as I love the 901.

I didn't have my 901 with me when I demo'ed as it was kinna impromptu.  Will do some comparison next time around and share more.  I do find the M the thickest sounding DAP outside of 901.  Very preliminary, this type of sound plus the much better aesthetics, built and UI could make it a viable alternative to the 901 for me.  As I have the AK240 now, the 901 is less of the best IEM dap but more of a change-up to bigger/fuller/denser sound for me, or as a mobile source at home with cans.

The sound described so far sounds nothing like what I heard from the Femto.

Well there is a lot of talk about DAP burn in on Head-fi. Perhaps the M needs a good deal of it to open up, to WOW as it were.

I just really want to know from someone with other TOTL Daps if the Calyx is in that class.
