Personally, I like that fact that Monkey used something that is regarded as detailed and close to neutral CIEMs to audition the device, the JH13(FP?).

Hey guys, I'm going to delay pt.4 until Wednesday as the lack of 1:1 music comparison and my crappy notes have made writing a comprehensible report kinda difficult. I know there's a lot of interest in these first impressions, given the scarcity of this new DAP, but I'd like to give as accurate (if subjectively biased) an impression as possible.

Given that I'm going down for a second audition, if people have specific requests, let me know before Tuesday midnight EST and I'll do my best to incorporate those into pt.4.

Unfortunately I will be limited to my personal collection (please see my signature for the IEMs I'm 'familiar' with) and what is available in store, so I will likely *not* be able to do a comparison with the dx90 or dx100/hdp-r10 as Jaben does not carry those models. I think they have a DX50 kicking around, but I have generally not liked the iBasso sound signature. They look great on paper but somehow never seem to satisfy me completely - sorry, that's just my bias ;)

I will also *not* be auditioning this with portable amps, as I don't have the time and these things are large enough that I don't feel that's going to be the most common usage. If you want a transportable rig, get a Hugo :P

@Sauntere - I tried the Calyx with the ER 4S and it was shockingly good. The slightly warm colouration did not detract from those crystalline highs the Ety is famous for, and the slight lower mid emphasis helped beef up the sometimes thin sounding lower end of the ER4.

Rating the Calyx in comparison with other DAPs is a slippery slope since there are improvements every 'generation' and what might have been a 9 once upon a time, is now a mere 7+ (i'm thinking IMod). Still, I'll try and quantify the strengths as long as everyone realizes these are my subjective opinions and not some newly invented universal scale (wouldn't that be useful!) :D

@SilverEars - I owned the mkI JH13s for about 4 years, but the demos I am using for this audition are the newer FP version. Don't worry, I'm familiar with the differences ;) Also, there are a lot of Monkeys on Head-fi, so the preferred abbreviation is mg :D

@cooperpwc - I agree with you on potential confirmation bias. I admit I was hoping the Calyx M was going to be good as it is a potential replacement for my lost RWAK100 (and a lot cheaper than an AK240). I don't know that it's a worldbeater, but I suspect it's going to be where my price/perfomance sweet spot lands :D

FYI, there are more photos and another users brief impressions to be found on the JabenSG facebook page

If you could test vs. the Sony Walkman ZX1, that'd be much appreciated.

monkeygod, thanks for your impressions, pls continue. In the end people are different and so bias cannot be avoided, do not hesitate to tell what and how you like or dislike. what surprised me is that from your posts it sounds like M got weaker amp section which is a pity. I feel thorn between ak120 and M or may even think about ak240 although looking at its price i feel silly

Well there's also FiiO's flagship X7 DAP to look forward to.

Cant wait for the M vs DX90 with those iems, your impressions will be the deciding factor in which I get!

Even if M is at at with the DX90, it certainly isn't UI and functionally wise, not talking about the myriad of outputs the DX90 has but whichever one is available, it's seems to be totally functional.

I don't understand what you are saying. Which one is more functional with the better UI and why?

M seems to be more functional, the DX90 still has functionality that has not been implemented yet, that's what I meant.

Aye DX90 feels rushed to market to me.

ibasso already had a lot of the work of the dx90 done by the dx50, such as the designing of the enclosure/screen/buttons , battery/charging circuit , firmware/software assets. They could focus entirely on the new dac and amp implementation.

If you mean rushed because it was released without some features working that's just classic ibasso :P They only have a small team and they know it will take time to develop those features which they can release in a patch, in the meantime why not release the great sounding dap!

You should have seen DX50 at launch. This makes DX90 well-polished in comparison.

Classic Ibasso I presume is that they aren't learning from experience. They had more or less the same design blueprint in DX50 yet they still have basic issues and other bugs that shouldn't happen.

I agree with Solude, they seemed to rush DX90 seeing the wave of anticipation following the DX50. It's more or less riding a wave of momentum.

Anyways, really hope the M can quickly be demoed here so I can choose between buying a DAP or a high end IEM :D

Ah, thanks. I think that big concern for the M may be lag in its responsiveness. Otherwise, if they can address that, I expect that the UI will be great.

The DX50 UI is meh so I won't expect much more from the DX90. On the other hand, if they port Rockbox to the DX90, that is hard to beat.

As for function, everyone has their own needs. I don't give as ram's damn about a digital out but it is very important for some people on here. On the other hand, a good active playlist is top of my key function list. It is the big thing that is missing on my X5 and a reason that I may yet get the M. The X5 + Pico Power is sounding very good.

How will the M sound with IEMs and no external amp? Inquiring minds want to know...!
