Despite all the drama, I'm still going to try this out. Will compare to the Sony... Hopefully it pairs well with the SE5 and NT6.

^ same here. I still wanna listen to it and compare to the Sony.
Whether I'm going to part my money or not, that depends on the SQ

I am gonna just buy it as soon as it is available. Only have a Studio 3rd to compare it with though...Oh and DX50 and C3 from memory only. Studio 3rd is better than both of those anyway.

I second the others who wait for M too, really curious to hear if this can become final stop for me in holy grail search, i already have 1plus2 IEMs and lovely T1 amp and RWAK100 and love this combo a lot, still i wish a DAP which does not need amp. If M SQ will be so good i will stop bothering about all upgrades.

You said a dap that does not need an amp therefore my suggestion: HDP R10 or DX100. Also X5 too though not as powerful as the first ones I mentioned. Apparently AK240 doesn't need an amp either but 2500 euros price tag need a thick wallet.

Since the M has NO Digital Out, I will wait to buy it until people tell me that it's DAC is really uber-super-good.  Don't want to take the risk since it is now a "closed system"

If it had Digital Out, I will have bought it blinded: I will have had the option to add a HUGO to it in case it needed it or to use it only at home as a source for my Desktop DAC.

..... Bad decision Calyx !!

Any further comments via pm... I had the DX50 for around two weeks. After letting it run for a week i sat down to listen critically. I don't remember the firmware version but it was fairly early on. Found the Studio to to have more space which i like in spite of the slightly softer (refined, rolled) treble. The mid range is also more open with better instrument and vocal separation. The DX 50 sounded closed by comparison. The Studio's bass doesn't go as low but somehow seems more powerful. I gave my DX50 to my brother in law after another week since the Studio simply made me happier listening to music.

I am expecting the M to trounce either of these two players. I know the Studio has it's issues not the least of which is the noise floor. It is however a powerful little beast and although the dac chip is considered 2nd or even 3rd rate it does sound very good. I really want a substantial upgrade in sound and i feel sure when i buy the M i will get it. The M is sure to have an inky black back ground which alone will help.

I don't really feel like doing D&A's publicity for them, since I feel they should just cut the crap and come out and show themselves properly, here on Head-fi (yes, I'm talking to you!), but, purely for the sake of my fellow Head-fiers, the following photos are attached, of what appears to be an actual production sample of the M

*

*

They are stating that

"Color trim is "CALYX BROWN", of course"

so, presumably, the above sample is 'naked', prior to anodising, unless they are leaving the main chassis natural silver and just having the plastic strip beneath the screen coloured brown (and maybe the rear panel?). If they do leave the main chassis natural silver, then it would be better than brown anodising, for the sake of the appearance of the DAP after some wear has occurred on the chassis edges (and after inevitable rapid wear to that volume-slider groove).

Regular contributors to this thread will note that they have ploughed-on with the flush buttons, thus making it much harder to control by touch and/or through a jacket lining . And that volume slider continues to defy commonsense. They were utterly determined to ruin the ergonomics for customers who wish to actually use this device in their pockets, so it looks like they've achieved the ergonomic failure they were aiming for.

Pity, as it's a nice-looking (and no doubt fine-sounding) DAP.

UPDATE: according to these pics, posted on facebook (25th March), it turns out the production model will be anodised brown all over, as originally rendered:

Isn't it amazing that they think it's important to make the badge, power button, and volume slider, stick out, but not the control buttons? :confused_face_2:

.

It looks like they created a bumper style wraparound. It's a departure from their original design obviously. It's starting to look like a fat iPhone 5S.

Do you mean the rounded edges?  The 3D renders on calyx.kr have been showing that for many weeks.

Yes, I guess I did not realize it because this one is not brown so it stands out. It still looks like a fat iPhone 5S biggrin.gif
