SHAPE OF EARS, SIZE of EARs

Thread Starter
I am relatively new to this forum, but after reading hundreds of posts, alot of the reviews seem to be lacking one important piece of information. On closed cans, the shape, size, and everything physical about your ears will make a lot of difference. It's like car audio subwoofers-some are FREE-AIR and some are for closed boxes.

Am I correct in saying that the size of your ear will significantly change the amount of total space left inside the cans, thus affecting the bass significantly?

It would also seem that the shape of your ear, that is, exactly the alignment of the ear canal to the center of the driver will produce significantly different HIGHS.

I am posting to learn, not make issues with any one. I am basing this on what I knew before.

So far I have only upgraded from Freebie Sony cans to the Senn 280 Pros. I do agree with most people about a lacking of mid-bass, corrected by my PC eq, but I am still too new to talk any more lingo for now. I am still at beginner level. I am happy that I found my Radio Shack headphone booster for now, and now that I know that a lot more heaphone amps exist, I am sure that I will appreciate a new one. So it's off to the AMPS section for a while.

I am almost 40 and primarily listen to heavy metal, source mp3's on PC. I have the SENN 280 Pros so far, so if you have a good match for my music and source to those, would appreciate all AMP suggestions

Hi. Welcome to head-fi You raised an interesting point. Jan's Meier's site discusses issue of headphone placement briefly in his "tips & tricks section":

"It's so easy, but did you ever test for the optimal position of your headphone? With many headphones the soundstage and the balance of sound are strongly dependent on the position of the driver to our ears.

Scientific research has shown that our perception of depth is increased when the driver is placed more forward and lower with respect to the entrance of the ear channel.

Experimenting doesn't cost you anything and may improve sound considerably."

As with the aspect of ear size, you are right in saying that ear size makes headphone listening different to everybody, that is why everybody hears differently. There is currently no way to measure & identify the size & shape of our ears, and imagine how tedious that would be. But it would be helpful though..."Hi, bear in mind that the headphone review was done by tortie with an ear size of 3-1/4 B"

No worries, he's been dealt with. But for future reference to report a post simply click the little symbol that has the exclamation point in it in the upper right of the post you want to report.

Report his posts. I think that's about all you can do. Maybe PM one of the Mods in this forum section. Doing so myself right now.

EDIT: Just saw your post Maher, thanks a bunch!
