Hi, I'm relatively new to the audio world and can't decide on my first pair of audiophile headphones. I listen to pretty much anything but mainly rock, my taste varies from fugazi to clint mansell to aesop rock to gojira.
My preferences for headphones are:
Open or closed
Detachable wire
Passive noise cancellation

Thanks in advance
PS. Sorry for sounding robotic

What sources are you plugging the headphones into?

It is pretty important to know if you wil be using a amp or not as PurpleAngel asked.

Among your preferences you ask for open or closed headphone and for passive noise cancellation aswell, Open headphones and passive noise cancellation seems contradicting.

For 300$ you do have some nice options, if you are using a amp/portable amp you have even more nice options.

I'm using an e17, and it doesn't matter if it has noise cancellation, I just don't want active noise cancellation.

I would go for a Beyerdynamic dt880, if it had to be something new.

You could always considder secondhand [e-bay], Philips x1, sennheiser momentum, ... also there are many similar threads to be found with basicaly the same question, along your digging you might come across many usefull impressions and reviews.

Not that this is a suggestion that fits your criteria, or a headphone I'd recommend as an all-arounder....but since you mentioned you liked Fugazi you should give them a listen on any Grado model at some point.   I think that type of music is perfect for Grado's.

be sure to replace the detatchable cable that comes with the x1, v-moda has good cables that arnt to costly.
switching the cables will improve the sound allot or maybe I beter say it wil let the x1 show the potential it has.
