Deciding on a DAC/AMP for my AD900x

I'm currently in the market for a desktop DAC/AMP (combo or separate) to help drive and liven up my AD900x's while listening to music/gaming on my PC.

My budget is between $125-$200. I've been looking at the Schiit Magni/Modi and Aune T1 in particular. Does anyone here have any personal experience with these combinations? If not, what have you all used with the 900x's that fall in that budget?

Thanks!

Asus Xonar DX or D1 sound card, used $60.

Schiit Magni headphone amplifier, $99.

The DX/D1 comes with a good DAC chip, CS4398 :)

and the Magni has a very low headphone output impedance, less then 1-Ohm :)

Couple of questions, is there any difference between the two  cards other than the D1 not needing a 4-pin power connector?

Also, I read somewhere that 7.1 is unnecessary and going with a 5.1 would be more suitable.

I'm ultimately looking for something to enhance music/sound quality over my on-board mobo sound. Surround sound for gaming isn't really too nessesary, though I don't think my headphones would really utilize that anyhow... or is there more to 7.1 than that.

I may also just go for a DAC atm and save the amplifier for later down the road, the headphones put out solid volume for now.

Thanks!

It depends on what kind of gaming you do. Could you be a bit more specific in that regard? If your focus is more on music, I say go with the Aune T1.

The T1 is a killer of a DAC/amp combo in a tiny little package.

The Xonar Dx and D1 are the same card, except the DX is PCI-E and the D1 is PCI.

If you do not want to use 7.1, then set the Xonar DX/D1 for 6-channel (5.1)

The Xonar DX/D1 DAC is going to be a noticeable improvement in audio quality, over on-board.

I'm leaning heavily towards the card for now, definitely a more affordable option for the moment. Thanks for the help, both of you!
