Wrecked Akg Q701 - Is it possible to fix?

Thread Starter

Basically, the right of the headphones completly stopped working. (This was before my son broke it).

I left it laying on the ground (I know, dumb move), and my son broke off the outer circular part of the headphones (Not really broke, but seperated), from the cup. I can see 2 cables that were supposed to be connected to the left cup (which still worked), and the cables that are connected to 2 metal part (that I'm assuming feeds audio to the other side of the headphone)

I saw that one of the cable that was connecting to the metal for the other side of the cup was not connected, so I tried soldering it, but the other side of the headphones would still not work :(. I saw the white cable was supposed to be connected to the metal piece (which connected it to the other side of the headphone) and also connected to the left side of the headphone. I assumed maybe it got loose, so I soldered it together and made sure it was definitely contacted with the metal piece, but even after that the right side of the headphone would not work.

Would it be worth paying for a repair and sending this to AKG, or should I just buy a new used pair?

Exactly right, a cheap multimeter with continuity testing will work (this one from Beezar has that function I believe: http://beezar.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=53 - and it's only $7.50!). Make sure you have the ground connected to both the left driver and the steel headband to the right driver.

If you wired the driver backwards, you might not get sound.  I made a similar mistake when recabling my K701.  Allowing the signal wire inside of a cup to loop over itself also cuts off sound.  Recabling/rewiring K/Q70x is a slightly tricky job.

Edi: and so, to avoid having the signal wire loop over itself, have both wires loop together with ground running next to the signal so that the signal wire doesn't loop directly over itself, sort of like how you see two wires stuck next to each other in this picture.
