Best Digital Transport Source Device to output to DAC

Thread Starter

Are most people using their computers as a source for audio files - to a DAC -- or are there other options?  I've been purchasing HD Tracks files and using a Colorfly C4 with a SPDIF output to a DAC - any better options and does it really matter if the storage device is outputting a digital stream to a good DAC.  Thanks!!

I am surprised by no responses. This guy explains in the link below about poor transports and how bad SP/DIF can be from various CD transports, also has a good explanation why Coax is better than Optical. It helps you understand why its so important as the DAC is only as good as the source digital signal and as you can see by his scope measurements most are garbage.

For digital I mix between a PC output and a a nice CDP Marantz CD6000 OSE Signature KI into to an Arcam irDAC. All this sounds good both ways and the PC to DAC allows High Res 24bit 192KHz and some jumping around playlist etc. I would say the CD player is a little cleaner paying the same track vs FLAC from PC but its not by much.

It all sounds low fi compared to my entry level Project turntable to a SET tube amp but this is the least convenient way to listen with lots of recent LP's coming on 2 records with 2 to 4 tracks a side but I do like the process.
