Find me a pair of over ear cans that make me put down my k240mkII

Like the title says, I'm trying to find a pair of over ears that would be a good addition to my AKG 240 and KossPP. I am right now definitely satisfied with the sounds of my AKGs. Its detail is great and I'm using a Fiio e10 to run it.

What Headphone would I upgrade to, that would be another whole level compared to my AKGs? I'm looking for better soundstage (clearer imagery), stronger bass and "fun" sound. Needs to be something comfy, like those AKG pads.

I mostly listen to classic rock or soundtracks, which I know are kind of the opposites of the musical range. I dont have a exact budget, so it can go up to 300$ if I needed to, but I am trying to look for better value.

Current thoughts:

DT 990 Pro - reviews say it gives a "fun" sound

AKG Q701 - I've tried this on before, and I cant say I don't like it

AKG K612 - This new pair seems to be on par with the 701, but at a lower price

HD - 600 - Everyone says this is the amazing pair? I tried it on and I like the pads but the sounds did not surprise me as much as when I first put on my 240s

Any suggestions on what I should upgrade to? Any good pairing to DAC/Amps are greatly appreciated too.

P.s. Its my first post, so sorry if I missed some community guidelines.

Thanks,

welcome to headfi, I am sorry about your wallet. have you looked MA 900?

My suggestion is go for HE 400. Look for used HE 400 in the sale/trade section of this forum. You can buy them at less cost. They are great phones. I like them a lot. Make sure that you buy rev 2 (white grill), if you buy used HE 400. You may need headband pad to increase comfort level. E 10 is capable of driving HE 400.

I would say to go for the DT990 Pro 250-Ohms or maybe the K612 Pro.

The DT990 would have a "fuller" bass, compared to the K240 more lighter bass.

Thank you for all the suggestions!

I live in China, so its quite difficult to find much secondhand audiophile stuff, even on head-fi. But i'll definitely check the MA 900 and HE 400 out.

About the DT990 and K612, the only thing i'm worried about is it sounding too similar to my k240. I want to find something that stands out compared to the k240, so do they sound different?

Thanks,

So I looked at some of the prices and this is what I have:

k612 - 180$

DT990 - 210$

HD650 - 350$

Q701 - 270$

HE-400 - 420$

Yea... Prices are a bit strange in china. Any suggestions?

It is strange that HE 400 costs about 420 $

Pick DT 990, If you are on tight budget. I guess DT 990 250 Ohm needs an amp to get most benefits.

Yea, especially since HIFIMAN is based in china. Do you think the e10 would be enough to power a DT990 fully?

And i saw some HE-300 for 250$, would those be better than the DT 990?

I guess, E 10 can drive DT 990

I do not know much about HE 300, however you could look these two threads also

Damnnn...

The more threads I read, the more I'm siding towards a HE-400. But the DT990's seems just one step under the HE-400. It seems like a noticeable difference in style, but both do sound outstanding. Wish there were shops around that would let me test both of them.

But I'm reading very different things on them. Some say DT990 are very comfortable cups, but some emphasize its listening fatigue. I certainly plan on wearing them for hours straight. Are the DT990's fatigue a big issue and should I just save and look forward to a HE-400? Of course, other headphones are welcome too.

HE 400 is planar and it is hard beat HE 400 in that price range. From K240 mkii to HE 400, you would be happy about choosing HE 400.

About comfort level, it is subjective. There are complaints about underpading of HE 400's headband. But I do not feel it as uncomfy. You may need a padding for headband like this, http://www.ebay.com/itm/Headband-Cushion-Pad-fit-New-Version-of-HiFiMAN-HE300-HE400-HE500-Ear-Headphones-/190825064042?pt=US_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item2c6e0f666a

Rubinstein, that's exactly what I needed to hear, I think. But I wonder if he ships international though, since I'm in china. I guess I'll have to wait until I have enough to buy a HE-400. Still don't get why its more expensive in the country it's invented in.

perhaps you could contact Hifiman and ask why the selling price of HE 400 is so costly in PRC:blink:

I would say add something from Grado line to your thoughts of candidates, they have fun and distinct house sound as far as I know.

I will look into that. Although I do see some offering Silver cables as a set, at around the same price, which is pretty nice.

For the Grados, I've always wanted a pair. But I don't know if they'll compete with the HE-400? Will I be looking at the i225?
