Schiit Magni or Asgard I ?

Hello everyone ,

I`m new to anything Hifi and I`m looking to buy my first equipment.
At first my eye was drawn too the the Schiit Magni and Modi combination.

But the retailer of Schiit stuff :p now has a Asgard I for sale at a reduced price which brings it pretty close too the Magni( only €75 difference ).

What is the better choice with respect too the future and the headphone that I have now , which is a Audio Technica ATH-M50 ?

Thanks for the help ,

Jeroen

The Schiit M/M combo will be able to power M50s easily and most likely future headphones. I hope to be getting this combo with my DT 990 Pro 250 ohms when I can find the money!

Magni is more then enough to drive your current 50-Ohm ATH-M50s.

As long as your future headphones are in the 25-Ohm to 120-Ohm range, I doubt you'll need the extra power of the Asgard.

So get the Magni/modi, then sell off your ATH-M50s and see how much of a budget you have for better headphones.

Thanks for the info :) I will get the Magni.

The Magni can have usability issues driving low-impedance, sensitive headphones like the M50 due to its gain setting and some channel imbalance on the volume pot at low settings, but if you're using the Modi with it, it may not be much of a problem due to the Modi's low output voltage (1.5V RMS).

If you upgrade later to a source with 2V RMS output, you might experience some volume-control frustration and will probably want to get an amp with a gain switch like the Asgard 2.
