London Calling meet impressions - Page 3

Big thanks to Nadeem for organizing such a well executed meet. No doubt lots of work went on behind the scenes to make it appear so effortless on the day.
Refreshing beverages (hot and cold), Lunch to keep us going through the day, and live music to feed the soul.
A venue with character, filled with characters smily_headphones1.gif
Plenty of latest and greatest gear from the vendors to lust over, member rigs to admire and stories to hear.
All this and raffle with some well deserved winners wink.gif
Full Marks all round!

Thanks again chaps, as long as things go okay, looking at doing just one large event next year around the end of May, I can commit to doing that.

Any vendors interested in booking a place, let me know.

Some of the stuff that folk asked about such as getting t-shirts made, running until 6pm has been taken on board and we should be able to do this.

Tentative date at the moment will be Saturday 24th of May. I will confirm within the next few weeks.

Event will be Head-Fi London 2014.

That would be sweet as it is a bank holiday weekend if I have looked at my calendar correctly and hopefully weather has more chance to be very nice around that time.   6pm is definitely an additional welcome as we all say "here, here"

A T-shirt would be great also, I think we would all would commit to commemorating our visit with one, maybe somewhere on the T-shirts could have the strap in there somewhere "Established 2013" perhaps add in "Russell Square" also as it has held the first two and have it in old swirly writing style!

Take it the third instalment is to be held again @ Russell Square?

Yes will be at the Hotel Russell again, known quantity and all that...smily_headphones1.gif I might try and aim for the Sunday of that weekend, seeing as it's a bank holiday on the Monday. Will need to check availability, etc first.

With a Saturday we would get two days to get over it! Lol, Sunday would be fine but just thinking with bank holiday there might be a few still  who would prefer it on the Saturday so they have a block two days free.  Always hold it to a vote : )

Russell Square is a nice venue and feels right at home there with also been with familiar in terms of location of toilets,I mean hotel!

Where is would you get victorian surroundings with a dining room almost identical to the RMS Titanic.

Fair point. From an organisational perspective, it makes it easier for me I guess. This event meant I had to get home, then get across to the Hotel on Friday night, we arrived around 9pm. Started liaising with hotel staff that evening then up at 6am to start at 7am.

....... Fair point, it is a long old one when you are organising it with the headaches that come with that anyway. Always see what the consensus is, it may be the peoples say Sunday anyway.

p.s. Could we have someone like Custom cables if they attend again to carry some stock of jack adaptors (to buy of course) for on the day for numpties like me who forgot their 3.5 -> 6.5 jack adaptors on the day (of all things to forget, so minuscule but yet so important) as it turned out other peoples jack adaptors where on the merry go round due to shortage of them and people possibly forgetting they had them on end of their plugs.

No worries Rockettron, it was the last meet one of the other head-fiers let me have a listen and was hooked on it, a very under rated porta amp the Vorzuge, Not sure what ohm the Grado PS1000 are but the Vorzuge went to my levels which as many around me heard was @ Wembley db check levels and and had some left on the dial to spare and sonically was an involving listening experience although there is no denying the PS1000 is been heavily subdued to it's full potential so can only imagine the PS1000 on a top dac/amp and source.  If you have not got the Vorzuge by next May just tag me so you can try it with someones PS1000 (if I have not got them by then!).

Remember in the last meet how there were almost too many HD650's around - this time it was the HD800's probably (!). Not a bad thing at all though as it was easy to get a decent listen to these headphones again. I was surprised by the Grado table where the PS1000 especially sounded good. A slight bit too bright but their soundstage and midrange was very advanced. Enjoyable listen.

Probably the star of the show was the T5p for me. I had these last year. I demoed them a few months ago and the only word I had to describe them was 'bad.' The one at the meet though was a different beast all together. It was like they were a cross between a d7k and T1, where the soundstage was large, period. Huge soundstage for a closed headphone and it had so many other good qualities to it where it didn't sound bright or tizzy in treble and it had a solid bass response.

The ones I had were burnt in for over 150hrs, so either the T5p's need a much longer burn in or there are some solid production variances between models. Interesting.

Thanks a lot Nadeem for organising this and thanks to all those who attended / bought along their gear. Great meet.

I feel lucky as with having so many HD800's there you get to see how they perform on average across the board of different equipment and even after three different sessions on different equipment I am amazed and perplexed at my own processing of these cans and am impressed with them as there whole presentation and sound is different to any other headphone i have listened to so far.

How did you find the T5p's compared to the HD800's or PS1000's?

I wanted to try the T5P but did not get around to it as that 4pm comes round very quickly but listened to the open back cans on the Beyer table as they was on my list of must listen to as I as I had a pair of late early 90's DT770 pro 600 ohm cans and enjoyed them for many years until I sold them to fund my only second pair of cans ever four years ago in the AKG702's so wanted to see f the current day Beyer sound had changed much at all despite there been that other dilemma of their choice in having open, closed or semi open back cans.

I had more of a instant addiction to the PS1000 than maybe the HD800's or the open Beyers but with the HD800's I just think I may be to use to a warm fuzzy sound compared to the very detail exposing but yet not over analytical HD800's.  Maybe the PS1000 had a bit more hand made soul to its signature where the HD800 is a typical German scientific efficient machine feel to it's listening. Impressed by both but trying to split hairs when can only choose one!

Might be worth checking trains (far too early to right now), as obviously Sunday is normally engineering works day, so could limit the attendees...

Thanks a lot Nadeem for organising this year's meet. That was just great and wonderful to see fellow members along with few veterans as well. It was interesting to see many people getting surprised when checking out my Yamaha MT220s and Hifiman HE-5LEs were a revelation anyway. At last I could get to audition TH-900s and they were good, not sure about the price around £1500 though. To me the stand out at the show was Smyth Realiser A8. That was phenomenal and never experienced something like that before. Truly excellent and amazing to say at the very least. I did the audition with my 5LEs as I am more familiar with my headphones rather than Stax. It's worth an audition for any audio enthusiast out there. I would like to buy it at some point in my life. Good to see few veterans and recent members and new faces.

And once again Nadeem needs a lot appreciation for doing this and shall try and attend the next one for sure.

Best Regards

Ven

Speaking to the Hotel soon, so will see what's available first. Was this event okay format wise ? Will try and organise name badges too for next time and perhaps some stickers too.
