i am looking for a pair of headphones. shocker, i know. i plan to use them primarily for movies and occasionally for games. my current setup is a ps3, an insignia tv with coaxial digital audio out and ordinary 3.5mm jack, an old realistic amplifier and 12 band equilizer. i love the speakers hooked up to the amp but they are too loud to use if anyone else is home, which is usually the case. so, i'm looking for a pair of headphones that are a bit higher quality than my current pair. right now i'm using sony something or others. paid like $30 for them. they are designed so they rest on your head instead of your ear to reduce discomfort while wearing them. i also have a pair of sharkoon extatic surround sound headphones. they have 4 speakers in each side. i liked them but they came damaged and i never sent them back to get them fixed and now they have too much static from my botched attempt at fixing them.

i'm looking for something with decent bass and clear highs. i would love surround sound, and i know virtual surround can be fantastic if done correctly, but i worry about compatibility with my setup.  as for budget, the glory of being young with no kids is i dont really have one. i was thinking maybe $100 or so but i could see going as high as $300 for the right set. i know i dont want to go over $500 and they would have to be really something to get me to even consider going that high. simply put, price isnt much of a concern if the sound and features show their worth.

i've found 3 headphones that have recommendations on here for similar usage that seem to fit my audio preferences. the sennheiser HD 280 pro, soundMAGIC HP100 and mr speakers mad dog. the question is, which to get? i'm not sure why but i kinda dig the mad dogs. i think it's the cool factor of having hotrodded headphones. the reviews are decent and it fits my price cap. thing is, i'm not sure it's worth the extra money over the other 2. the HP100 seems well built, ilike to design and the comments on it's sound make me happy. i like the 260 purely for the price. as of now i'm kind of leaning towards the soundMAGICs but i would like to know what you guys think.

as a side not, i am thinking about getting this as well http://www.amazon.com/Force-Channel-Dolby-Surround-Processor-Mac/dp/B003O0KICS any opinions?

Astro Mixamp is what you want to look into for an external device for creating more of a surround sound effect.
