Hello! I'm new here and am looking for a good budget set of headphones suited for music like John Mayer, David gray, Coldplay, and some folk music. Mostly John Mayer I listen to his music the most.

Hi!
Do you need isolation?
Budget = under 100?

You should read about Shure's SRH-840.

Good all-rounder, closed back, confortable, extra earpads, detacheable cable. This are revealing headphones so, you will get the best of them with good recordings. Probably not the best headphones for highly compressed music, very sibilant recordings, etc.

Best Luck!

How do those compare to the Audio Technica ATH-M50's? Would they be better suited for my music tastes or are the M50's better?

Shures are probably more detailed. Some say their highs are more refined (quite dificult to prove)
It is a less bassy headphone, with more mids presence than M50s, that's why I think they are better for your needs.

After all, only your ears after some extensive listening sessions with each headphone could tell you which one you enjoy the most.

Anyway you can't go wrong with any of this headphones. Both are good and really enjoyable objects in my opinion.

Best Luck!
