Does the Fiio X3 Also Need a DAC?

Thread Starter

Hi all - I am brand new to the site, and was looking for some quick advice.

I currently do most of my listening using a Fiio X3, and do not spend much time listening through a computer. I am looking to upgrade my equipment to the Hifiman HE-400 headphones, and the Schiit Lyr. I know Schiit also has some pretty cool DACs, but since I use the X3, will I see much of a benefit through an additional DAC?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Joe

I would think you could get a better DAC and connect it to the FiiO X3, if you have the spare cash.

Heya,

The X3 is a DAC/AMP portable unit, an all-in-one DAP. It makes no sense to connect a DAC to it.

It does make sense to have an external amplifier to connect it to, for more powerful output for headphones that require more power. The Lyr is vast overkill for the HE400 though. You can do with a lot less than that, if you want to save some money.

Very best,
