Looking for my first audiophile headphones!

I have been researching for a long time now about getting a nice set of headphones. Currently I have the Astro A40 with the mixamp 2013 edition. People have said that the a40s are not a very good headset and I have came down to some headphones that may be good for the price.

My maximum range is ~230 CAD.

1. Beyerdynamic DT 770 80 ohms

2. Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro

3. Audio Technica ATH-M50s

4. Sennheiser HD 598

5. Please suggest others!

From what I have read is that the DT 770s are probably the best bang for my buck and the 80 ohms will fit nicely with my astro mixamp rather than paying even more money for an amplifer for 250 ohms DT 770.

Another question is that if and once I get one of these headphones and connect it to my astro mixamp, will I use optical to my computer or just the mp3 3.5mm jack to my computer?

I am also living in Ontario, Canada and if you know a place where I can find DT 770 80 ohms for a good price that would be a big bonus considering USA duties aren't cheap!

Hello,

What genre of music do you listen to or/and do you game with them? Will you be using them while on the go? smily_headphones1.gif

If you are planning to use them while outdoor, you definitely want something closed and the HD598 is definitely not for you! The COP (Custom One Pro) is not recommended unless you love bass! The DT770 is better smily_headphones1.gif

Another good alternative to ATH-M50 would be the Utimate Ears UE6000.

Back to the HD598, I must say, the imaging on these are great! Love it for gaming and movies! smily_headphones1.gif

Hope it helps!

Thanks for the reply!

I like listening to dubstep, moden music. Really a variety of highs and lows that are accurate. I will not be using them on the go very often. The most I will be using them on is probably my Macbook Air.

I will be using mostly in doors at my computer desk hooked up to my astro mixamp. I do play a bit of gaming, not much right now but off and on. Currently just some casual GTA V that require audiophile headphones.

EDIT: I will probably guy headphones before christmas and then wait to get an amp with a budget of <$90 (Fiio most likely)

I vote for the DT770/80Ohm!

I heard good stuff about the ATH-WS99 as well but have never tried it so I am not going to comment anything about it but you can look into it as well :)

I've heard the WS99 are mediocre.  Considering this is your first pair of "real" headphones, I doubt you'll be disappointed with whatever you choose.  Because you won't be using them on the go very often and because you do some gaming I recommend the HD598.  They sound a ton better than your other options IMO. DT770s have an early treble cut off and almost non existent mids.  Custom One Pros don't do bass as well as DT770s and M50s are good-ish at everything and terrible at nothing (over rated if you ask me)  If you can buy HD598s I think those have the best sound stage for gaming, the best all around sound signature that is a little bit on the warm side so you''ll still have nice controlled bass even if you don't use an amp.  HD598s make dubstep, D&B, almost every genre good.
I think the HD598s are the best cans on your list.
