Here's a good question for all you guys:

IF the Oppo PM1 ends up having a substantially inferior sound quality relative to HE500 / Alpha Dogs (but is still quite good), what price are you willing to pay based on the build quality / looks alone?

Considering the prices of vintage orthos and stats, nothing.

+1

When I'm ready for a new player, I dont' even bother doing research anymore...I just buy the current OPPO product. There aren't many companies/products I can say that about.

I will be more reasonable and say $155.55.

I've never heard the 500s, ergos aside, and considering people pay much more for a slight increase in SQ, on top of the HE400 not being that far behind in SQ... $299 preorder. With ergos, novelty, and looks going for Oppo... $399MSRP.

We are talking about something from China, where bang for the buck is the name of the game. However I have 0 experience with any Oppo products so they may ride loyalty points and the hype train.

Btw, good job on setting a bar.

I will look to a alternative Headphone.
There are some with blown minding sound and artful design with a price range between $150 & $500

I don't know if these can really be called hyped up.  People are excited, but no one has really tried to compare these to other heapdhones based on sound.  Hype on Headfi usually is one or two people getting an early listen, raving about it, and then creating a crazy dialogue where people who have never heard the headphones start comparing these to others.  This is more excited speculation.

Oppo in some ways is anti-hype.  While you may think $1K is crazy money for a Bluray player, Oppos have always been able added features and value and have performed with players many times more expensive.  This is what generates the loyalty to the brand, and I doubt Oppo would try to milk that too much.  I think we can expect a decent value proposition form Oppo, but in comparison to what?  A T50RP?  Vintage orthos?  Probably not and I think it silly to expect that.  In comparison to an Abyss?  Would be hard to not be a value compared to it.  I think the Hifiman lineup is going to be the interesting barometer since the HE-400 and HE-500 currently hold a sweet spot for value in the ortho lineups and in general (and are made in China).  If it sounds as good as the HE-500 and is priced around the same amount, I think Oppo will make a killing.  They look better and more comfortable than the Hifimans and would be an easy choice if they hit those two marks.  If there did, then even at $6-700, they would be a good value and in line with the rest of Oppo's line ups.  I really hope for a $6-700 headphone and a $1000-1200 dac/amp.  Assuming appropriate sound quality, those would be acceptable price points for me based on looks and features.

How they will sound is anyone's guess since this is Oppo's first headphone.  I don't know if Oppo will launch in China prior to NA, but either way, I am going to try to listen to one as soon as I can.
