Oppo PM-1: A New Planar Magnetic Headphone! - Page 130

I finally received my pair after ordering a month ago and various delays. The numerous negative comments about being mid-fi and unflattering comparison to LCD2 nearly led me to cancel my order.

I have been using the HE-6 nearly exclusively for the past two years despite trying all other flagships.

All I will say is that I am really surprised by all the negative comments as it is a superb headphone. I only detected a slight tonal unbalance so far in the upper mids but imaging, treble and detail retrieval are all first class and very close to the HE-6. The mids are more pronounced, smoother and more detailed than the HE-6.

The Hifiman is more open and spacious and has better timbre.

My main disappointment is with comfort. The pads are small and my ears get quite warm quickly. I slightly prefer the roomy feeling of the Hifiman pads (Beyer DT990 pads  in fact) so far.

Still no update about the release date of the PM-2 ?

If you are lucky, late-June. But most likely it is going to be July.

Thanks for all the quick responses to questions; it's always refreshing to see that sort of involvement from a member of a fairly large company.

Is an Oppo® Digital representative scheduled for the 16 July 2014 meet at the Doubletree Airport, South San Francisco, CA, USA?  I wanted to A/B the PM-2, along with the RTM PM-1, against both my current Plantronics® 380 headset ("the baseline") and several medium-Z Sennheiser® HD-series models I have under consideration for a primary headset for an Asus® CM1630-06 packing a XONAR®.

Attending Head-Fi meets and other trade-shows are being discussed, but I can't yet confirm which we will be attending. But I will say that it is likely that any show which is in our backyard, so to say, will be attended by OPPO.

Any word when Tyll is releasing a review of the pm-1? I'm interested to hear what his opinions are because he seems to like the same signature as I do.

Couldn't quite finish it up before Newport.  I'll post it after I finish the Newport show reports. Don't want it to get buried by them.

Early next week, I reckon.

Hey Tyll, I hope you give the PM-1 a try with a Pete Millet amp (like the Teton or Pinnacle you have used in the past -- I think it's superb with the Pinnacle),

and also with your own classic and great Headroom amp (that I also have noted seems to be a great match for the Oppo).

(edit: and by the way, the Headroom Max is also a great match for my LCD3; I really enjoy this combo also and can listen for hours to this combo to a sound that is really profound)

Is there a YouTube video to go along with it? Because that would be awesome as well.

Correction. Had to return PM-1 due to really bad fit. Really uncomfortable, don't recommend. Eating my words.

I think the PM1 should have a price similar to the HiFiMan HE500, since that's about the weight it's punching at. (Good but not fantastic sound, Chinese manufacturing, etc. etc.)

Pricing it against the Audeze offerings is unfair to the PM1...

I would imagine in a year or so, once the initial new toy fever has worn off, the PM1 will go on "perpetual sale" for somewhere around $899-$799, and there will still be better choices.

The PM2, on the other hand, might drop down to around $300-$400 and end up one of the best deals in PM headphones, if early speculation of near identical sound to the PM1 turns out to be accurate. I guess we'll see.
