CanJam at RMAF October 2013 Impressions Thread - Page 7

hey all!

@Frank I did a GREAT job w/ his pics and commentary thus far!!

SO glad to have him in the Positive Feedback editorial family now!

I'm caught in Salt Lake City on the lay-over, and the Wifi is shotty, so uploading pix is taking FOREVER!

I'll try to post some shots and add more impressions when I get home and spend some time w/ the wifey!!

In the meantime:

Loved the Cavalli Liquid Gold w/ my own LCD3's and Abyss - I got what I look for in ANY audio rig: The

technology/specs/model numbers left my brain and all that was left was me and the music.

Thanks to Alex Cavalli for that terrific experience!  I'm going to be tackling a review of one of his amps soon.

I was also VERY impressed with ALO's new Island!  I think I MAY have found a replacement for my DACport!

I also used my own cans (LCD3s and my Cardas IEMs) for my audition, and the music was engaging and airy.

I got one from the guys - so expect a review of that as soon as I get it broken-in!

Plus - I lent my own ALO RSA cable adapter to the ALO fam (they forgot to pack one, you know how it is)

so I haven't even heard the Island via the balanced output yet and I'm impressed!!  A FUN listen

The Schiit Vali - just WOW.

I told Jason this is why they're the schiit!!  I was truly so engrossed in the music while listening to that piece

and the Modi DAC that I could've say there all that.  And unlike many small tube gimmick amps - this is the real

deal!!  I'm going to have to open the wallet for that!  At $119 bucks, I can't WAIT to toss it up against stuff costing

10X the price in my Sonic Satori Personal Audio Lab!!!!  BRAVO to them.

THe Roxanne - man, I told Jerry for the first 2 days I wouldn't do it!  LOL  The OG JH-13 Pro (which now I have the Freqphase)

changed my whole outlook on IEMS for personal use (because I used to work w/ Jerry when our artists needed in-ear monitors

at Atlantic Records - so they just seemed like a performance tool to me for years) - and I was VERY lucky to be the first to review

the JH-13!  So I was honestly scared my wife would shoot me if I liked it that much.

Well - I broke down on Sun early and brought my own AK100 (they were using AK100 and AK120 for sources there) and all I gotta

say is I ended up dancing on the CanJam floor!  It blew me away, but I did have problems with those tips, keeping a seal.  But the

sound was fluid, impactful, and just downright fun to listen to.  I LOVED em.

I'm also working on a review of the RHA IEMs

- (forget which model I got at the moment) and they've got some TIGHT bass for 119 bucks!!

After further listening, I believe (as a former LCD2 owner, and an LCD3 devotee) that the LCD-X maybe my favorite Audeze headphone.

I gotta spend more time with it and I will ASAP!!

They seemed to give me the out-of-your-head-completely experience of my HD800's, coupled with the wonderful tonality and window-like

transparency of my LCD3's in one set of cans!  They stripped away the tech and also gave me a clear looking glass into the music.

Much more commentary to come on that!!

pics to come when I'm home w/ the bandwidth!

BIG ups to @jude and Joe for the show, and @warrenpchi for the new sexy signage!!

more coming!!

Mike it was great to hang with you for a bit out there and I am super excited to be working with PFO and Part Time Audiophile. I had a blast and will call you this week to talk over some stuff. Get home safe.

SWEET job w/ the pics and commentary Frank!

I'm still sittin' in Salt Lake on a lay-over coming back!!

Cool.  I didn't realize Music Hall was at the show (but I guess I should assume that every manufacturer was there, since there were 170 this year).

I have a Music Hall A35.2 driving my living room system.  I'm a huge fan of their products, especially in the value column.

I had a blast with Drew, Leland and Roy Hall had us all pissing in our pants with his humor. Drew an I were pushing him to make some more portable stuff. Hope he decided to do it.

Had a great time meeting so many of you I've only known online.  And a great dinner out, too!

Great show this year; tons of fantastic sounding gear, good company, and some amazing new innovations all around.

Reading through all the great impressions, like most years, I've seemed to have missed out on a few pieces of gear that would have been very intriguing to hear... oh well, there's always next year!

I'll try to give some more detailed impressions later in the week, but below are some of the pictures I took of the event, on Friday and Saturday:

Once again, just an amazing show... I think I now know what my next two headphones will be and definitely found my new amp, hopefully new sooner rather than later...

To another great show!  :beerchug:

I didn't get to bribe you with dinner (and thanks for the invite Sat. night btw Dan - I shoulda grabbed

my cousin and gone w/ ya'll!  I had just gotten some bad news about my pet at home and needed some

downtime after the Sat. Beer Social..

we ended up just eating some food that Alex and Mark ordered in - before continuing the party elsewhere, LOL

-but, IS there a bribe available to perhaps move up my pair of Alpha Dogs in the production cueue????

I'm down for human sacrifice in order to get those, no problem...

Seriously though Dan, it was SO cool to hear about all the festival stuff you've been involved in!

We've definately been to some of the same parties brother.

And thanks for the BIG smiles while we were DJing,

I enjoyed getting to s/w you on a more personal level.  That's what I love most about all this!  The peeps, the music,

AND the gear...

speaking of - just got home, gotta get some rest, but Wonder who these cats are (and will post more soon):

AWESOME.

I love Roy and Leland - such good people.

and Drew's the SH__

Hell, I still rock my Music Hall USB-1 turntable when I digitize wax!

I wrote about it for The Daily Swarm actually -

and even use my dac25.2 w/ Sovtek upgrade sometimes.  I like the headphone

amp section of that piece w/ my HD 25-1 IIs

Roy also gave me my first high end integrated amp.

Remember the Creek unit Frank, it was small, but had solid power.

4330 maybe?  Can't remember.  But I constantly turn family and friends looking

into Hi-fi onto Music Hall.  I haven't been disappointed and much of their

stuff sounds just as musical as MANY 4X the price!!

I'll PM you to make sure you got my new addy!

We moved back to Northern Cali remember.

Wow, and we only sacrificed a goat thus far!!

Man, am I PUMPED!!  And I was lucky you had a Burson Conductor back at CAS

to hear them with, as its one of my reference desktop amps - and one I rock w/ my

Mad Dogs!!  I used my Mad Dogs w/ my CEntrance HiFi-M8  on the way to CanJam

in the plane, imagining the Alphas!!

You ROCK

Psyched to hear you met Joe Reynolds from Nordost too.

He and I go back to 1996 - he's such a good man.

OK, can tell I'm fadin...

man was it fun though!!

Just some minor corrections: the HeadAmp GS-X MK2 is $2780/$2980 (Alpha/DACT, respectively) and the BHSE is $5500/$6500 (DACT/Alps RK50, respectively). Also, MrSpeakers was displaying only the Alpha Dog, not the Mad Dog.
