SONY MDR V55 Mod!

Hey all!!

This is my first time back on the site in 2+ years (I'm a sophomore in college now), but I'm back with something to share! I'm sitting here in my dorm, bored as ...bricks? and for the past few days I've been researching headphones for a friend. Of course Head-fi was the first place I checked... yadda yadda.. Lol anyway, I had the most random idea - mod my V55s (greatest idear evar). I have a broken pair of Sony MDR V6's with Beyerdynamic velour earpads. I missed how much I loved the comfort of the pads that I took off the pads of the V55s and replaced them with the velour. IT'S SO COMFY!!

(For this next section, PLEASE forgive me. my headphone vocab/terminology isn't that great)

The soundstage is of course increased by around a lot of percent, haha. I'm hearing instruments I haven't quite heard or paid attention to now. Unfortunately the bass isn't as prominent now, but I'm sure I'll get used to this. I'm still trying to think of what I can do to get some of that bass back while keeping the velour. The hi's and mids are definitely more elevated or prominent now as well. What I REALLY wanted to do was put the velour pads over the original pads... but it'll be too bulky. Here's some pics!!

hey,

what happened to the Bass when you put the velour pads on? is it better or worse?

Thanks for being the first reply! The bass is a bit "worse"; it's not as defined and there isn't too much of that bumping bass as it was normally. There is still bass, don't get me wrong. If only there was a way I can get the same bass from before!

hey,

try putting some cotton balls in the lip of the pad. stuff them under the velour between the lip and the mesh. should work.all the way around-if you dont have cotton balls roll up a paper towel and stuff it in the lip.

Wow thanks, it worked!! I used those flat cotton rounds... 4 in each cup.

What headphones have you done that with?

hey,

you can use that trick with most headphones. almost always gives the bass a kick. i learned about that right here on GS.you are in the right place if you want to learn about headphones.not including me there are some really smart people that hang out here.

enjoy!

Hi Meshaboo,

I am not sure to get it, you just put the pads of the DT250? Isn't the V55 cup too small? How do you solve the round cup vs long pad issue?
