Anyway, the K701 can be had for around 180 USD, the K701 is around 270 USD [assuming it is same as the Q1, the Q1 is not a good deal at 330 USD, K702 being 30 USD].

The K612 Pros are probably a better deal than the K701s though the bass is noticeably weaker, right?

Then again the K701 might be great with the M-Stage... Decisions, decisions :P

Ah I see.

The K612 is stronger and more present in the bass than the K701. The K701 has more present highs and upper midrange.

Yeah, that's what I thought.

Anyway I meant to say the K612 was 180 and the K701 was 270.

Say, if I like the MA900 as is and would like a bit more treble and some more extension, refinement, a bit better imaging and wouldn't mind a smidge less bass, which one'd you recommend?

Do you feel that the K701 does not have enough bass for my genres? [Pop, alternative/rock, instrumental OSTs, though a bit of everything else too].

I am sorry for all these questions, I guess the K612 is a better choice, I just worry the vocals might be too soft and the cymbals too indistinct for instance. I like a lot of energy/dynamics in the sound, while keeping things detailed and balanced [kinda what the MA900 does IMO]

That makes sense. Well the K612 has a smidge less midbass and upper bass than the MA900, but it has noticeably more subbass and the texture of the bass is completely different. I thought the K612 was more of a genre master of the two. The K612 does have better extension in the highs than the MA900. The K701 extends a little further in the highs than the K612, the K612 extends deeper in the bass than the K701. The K701 was more energetic but it also sounded more distant than the K612 due to it's wider soundstage.

The K612 is a little brighter than the MA900, so it has a bit more energy in the highs.

Thanks, now it's 60% K612, 40% K701 :D

You sure the K612 is different enough to the MA900?

I was under the impression the K701 seemed more different to the MA900 [going by the sound sig]

But you heard both, so you're the boss :P

Well they have a different sound to them. I never thought they sound that much alike, neither the K612 or K701, the K612 and K701 are more similar to each other than they are to the MA900. Other than both the MA900 and K612 being a little on the dark side I don't really consider them very similar as the presentation is quite different. The K701 shares a wide soundstage and a more in front of head projection of sound like the MA900 due to angled drivers.

Just bought the 2014's Matrix M-Stage [USB DAC module] :D

And the K612 Pros will be the first headphone bought for it [well among the X1, MA900 and W1000Xs :P]

Got the K612s first impressions are VERY positive [though I will probably buy the K702 pads just for the sake of it].

These are very early impressions, while still waiting for my M-Stage to arrive [so relatively underamped out of my Clip+]

The sound signature is great for me, detail retrieval is amazing, bass are very tight, mids are very good, imaging is excellent, soundstage is big enough, highs are good too [though admittedly a bit sibilant yet].

I imagine the amp will solve the few things that are lacking now, but even out of my Clip+ it beets the MA900 [IMO] in almost everything except for air [:/] and raw soundstage size [Though I imagine it will improve with the Matrix].

The sound is very good out of the box too [though burn-in usually has little effect to me], comfort is pretty great too [zero padding on the headband initially concerned me, but it turned out to be a non-issue, as they are really lightweight, they seemed heavier from the pics, but they are almost as light as the MA900, much lighter than the X1s ], though the Angled K7XX pads might be a bit better [I'll buy them later]

Very happy with the decision [thanks a lot kman!], saved a buck and am very happy :]

Impressions/comparisons will come when the amp is here, but I am really, really impressed. I am only said it took me so long to try the AKG brand, but am glad I finally did.

Also, these are made in China [well designed and engineered in Austria, but made in China :D]

I also had no idea AKG is a subsidiary of HARMAN, good to know :P

The sibilance reduces when amped well, it does show a little more sibilance than the MA900 though because it's a little brighter and more revealing. I found they did improve a bit with burn or at least the breaking in of the pads. Just wait until you hear them amped. It seems only the first batch was made in Austria.

It would be great if you could do a review in the reviews section, everyone seems to like the 612 but the internet in general is severely lacking in reviews for them!

Wow - didn't realise I hadn't actually posted a review myself - just the comparison one with the K702.  I should probably rectify that ....

Sorry for not replying, but I've been away for a couple of weeks.  The receiver is a Denon DRA-500AE.

Now that I have the amp [M-Stage] I can finally say that the K612 Pros are really amazing :]

They do beat the MA900 in all aspects IMO, except for sheer soundstage size, but it definitely wins at imaging and separation there.

The angled pads I've ordered [K702] are amazingly comfortable, but they mess the sound a lot [essentially make the cans warmer... lol] like more bass and less mids/treble, worse imaging, slightly wider stage but the imaging really suffers...

The stock pads are really good regardless.

Of all my headphones, these have the most highs extension [good] which makes my preparations for the new HiFiMAN easier.

I'll be selling some of my headphones though... Not the K612 or the X1s, but the W1000X or MA900 might go...

They're pretty good aren't they ;)

Funnily enough after owning the K701, K702, Q701 and K612 Pro - the K612 Pro is one I may yet eventually buy again.

Yes, yes they are. Surprisingly so for that price.

Since I got the M-Stage already though, I am still looking forward to initial reviews on how the 400i/560 does :]
