Btw, the Aune T1 looks good what do you think?

They all sound quite different than the MA900, they all have that distinctive AKG sound, either the K612 or newer K701 are good, can't really go wrong with either as an intro to the AKG sound, they have different strengths and weaknesses, the K701 is a little more detailed and slightly more refined while the K612 being more intimate and natural imo. What genres do you mainly listen to?

I've heard good things about the amp but I have no clue how good the synergy is with the AKG phones.

Or maybe the matrix mstage. One of the. Two probably.
I listen to a lot of stuff. Pop (MJ), rock (Linkin Park, poets of the fall, Jeff Williams,...), classical (Zimmer) lots of outs for movies/games, some dubstep, rarely hip hop, wlectronica... I got a broad genre taste.

I haven't heard that amp yet, I'm a tube guy personally.

Ah Poets of the Fall, great band, I have a broad genre taste myself, so genre master headphones are important to me.

Yeah, I love the Poets.

I am a SS guy so... but I haven't really heard tubes before so whaddya know :P

I've narrowed it down to 4 DAC/amps but I really dunn owhich one to choose :/

SMSL SD-650

Topping D3

Matrix M-stage HPA-2 + USB DAC

Aune X1

All seem great for the price [M-Stage being the most expensive though...] but I'll need some help deciding :/

Add these to your list:

  1. Audio-gd NFB 15.32 (http://www.audio-gd.com/Pro/Headphoneamp/NFB1532/NFB15.32EN.htm)
USD 235 + shipping (from China)
Very powerful.  Clean DAC with a touch of warmth

  2. Audio-gd NFB 11.32 (http://www.audio-gd.com/Pro/Headphoneamp/NFB1132/NFB11.32EN.htm)
USD 299 + shipping (from China)
Again very powerful.  Neutral DAC (sabre chip)

I haven't heard the 11.32, but I own the 12.1 (which is now discontinued, but was the same as 15.32 - except 15.32 has better USB stage).  Will drive any dynamic with ease - handled my former 600 ohm Beyer DT880s easily.

I loved my NFB 12.1 with all of the AKG's when I owned them (K701/702/Q701/K612) - preferred it to tubes actually.

Oh I know A-gd very well :] It's just that they are above my budget.

What about the M-stage + [its] USB DAC?

I need an RCA in though so Compass 2 [399 - 499 + 50 shipping and partial VAT/tax] would be the cheapest unfortunately :/ Too much right now.

Sorry Conq - haven't heard any of the other amp/DACs you mentioned.

You could try question in the Q701 or K701 appreciation threads.  Likely to get a lot more replies + results would also apply to any of the 701/702 or 612.

Yeah, it's hard to say if your a tube or ss guy unless you have tried both, after trying tubes I realized I couldn't go back to ss, but I do prefer the more full and organic sound that tubes generally have. I only know of the Aune X1 and the M-Stage, haven't heard of the others. I think either will do fine.

Don't tubes roll off the highs/warm up the sound?

I know you can roll them but... that's the thing, I'd never be satisfied :P

Depends on the tube amps and tubes. Tube amps being rolled off in highs and being inherently warm sounding is a misconception based on some of the warmer, darker, and lusher sounding tube amps. Many tube amps do lean on the warm and darker side because many enjoy the warm tube sound. It's like saying SS amps are cold and clinical based on a cold and clinical ss amp. The tube sound isn't because of warmth in my experience, I noticed tubes tend to have more inherent body, roundness, and fullness to the sound which causes them to sound more organic imo. Some tubes and tube amps are actually on the cold and analytical side with plenty of sparkle and extension up top.

Its OK, I'll go with the 2014's M-stage + USB DAC. And the K612 Pro.

I am sure the M-stage will be amazing, skimping on amping would be stupid.

Which one you think has more air, the MA900 or the K612?

Also just how much more airy is the K/Q701 compared to the K612s?

I found the MA900 to have a little more air, the K612 has better extension in the treble. The K612 also has more detail and refinement in the treble. The Q701 is noticeably more airy than the K612 and the MA900.

Ow, I like air a lot in my sound :/ I am not sure again :P

Anyway, the K612 can be had for around 180 USD, the K701 is around 270 USD [assuming it is same as the Q1, the Q1 is not a good deal at 330 USD, K702 being 30 USD].

The K612 Pros are probably a better deal than the K701s though the bass is noticeably weaker, right?

Then again the K701 might be great with the M-Stage... Decisions, decisions :P
