Sennheiser Comparison Thread. Anybody heard several diff models?

Hello all,

With the current Amazon sale going on with Sennheiser HPs, I am tempted to make a purchase.

However, I am very limited in my experience with their line up, so I was wondering if there was anyone on here who has a lot of experience with several models and could do a compare/contrast between the different models.

For the record, I HAVE heard the HD 201 (used to own them, but it was so long ago, I do not have much recollection of their sound), and VERY briefly heard the HD 429, 449, and 598. However, I have spent maybe 3-5 mins toal with each model, and didn't even have the opportunity to listen to a single complete song on any of them.

Any advice guys?

The models on sale/ones I am looking at are as follows: HD 429, 449, 518, 558, 598.

I will be up front and state that I thought the 598 was bright, but I only listened it to it for a couple mins at the most, and even then, I was just skipping around on my 5th gen ipod video. No amp was used.

Thanks. smily_headphones1.gif

558 is a little more tubby than the 598.  I like it more.  I would personally get the HD650 but I don't know your budget or if they're even on sale.

I have heard the 650 and LOVE their laid back sound. Unfortunately, they are not on sale, and my budget doesn't allow for them. That is why I am looking at the ones I am. Lower cost/on sale makes them tempting.

The 598 is pretty good and shares some sonic similarities with amazing 600, but it's a bit light on bass.

Thanks for the info. Perhaps I should pass on the 598s then. I currently have Grado SR80i, and they are bright with lean bass as well. I would like to get a model that sounds the "opposite" (so to speak). Something dark sounding with deep (subsonic) bass extension, that isn't shy about letting you know its there. Not looking for crazy inaccurate over emphasized bass...just a "good amount" if that makes sense.

Grados are bright in an aggressive way though. The HD598 while not having a lot of bass are quite smooth in their overall sound signature, without the treble peaks that make the Grado sound bright. They should be a more relaxing listen.

I owned the 518s quite a while ago, but IIRC, they were pretty warm and laid back.  I think they'd be an excellent complement to your Grados.
