So which type of amp, tube or SS, sounded best with the K812?

The tube amps I heard the K812 on were the Eddie Current Balancing Act, WooAudio WA2, Hifiman EF-5, Red Wine Audio Cassabria, and a few others.
Did you prefer one over the other, and if so, why?
How about SS amps. Considering the 2 options, which did you prefer?

Great price and very interesting unit. I wonder what are the trade off compared to its big brother, amplification wise.

Wow great news Nomax!

Good price too and that little thing is super cute. Haha. Might be just the ticket for K812 owners on a budget.

MacBob, I'll be making a business trip from today. When I get back over the weekend, I'll give it a longer listen and let you know what I think. I just listened to the tube amp a couple of hours last night after packing. smily_headphones1.gif

+1

I've always been intrigued by the Big brother but put off by the asking price. This may be the ticket at an affordable price. smily_headphones1.gif

I'm curious if K812 synergize well with amps that synergize well with TH900, both being low impedance and all. If that's the case, the Bakoon should be amazing, if Headphonia's review of the TH900 is to be believed.

Not sure, I haven't listened to the K812 and TH900 side by side enough, wouldn't be surprised if they synergize well on similar systems. I did find the K812(36 ohms) and the R10(40 ohms) to synergize well with similar systems though at least with my experience.

Which makes the Graham Slee Solo UL an intriguing prospect: it's a SS that sounds tubey. I'll give it a listen this weekend. smily_headphones1.gif

Of all the amps I heard, I liked the Balancing Act the most, I felt it gave the most organic and convincing sound of the amps I heard it on. I only heard the K812 on a few SS amps, the SPL Phonitor, Sennheiser HDVD 800, and the Matrix M-stage. The SPL Phonitor was my favorite of the SS amps I heard on it. Overall I prefer them on tubes but I felt they did well on both tube and SS. I am a person that prefers the tube sound to the SS sound.

It would be nice to hear some comments from people who have the Classic amp and both HD800 and K812.

Also I want to go back what I said about portable deviced how the K812 Pro suits them. I feel that I was too harsh in my prervious comments since my experience was only about one AV-amp which obviosly didn't work that well with the K812 Pro. Incidently the same amp also produced a weird low sounding humm into the HD800, no such things when using the Classic.

no drama bro. the guys at the store where i tried the k812 were raving about it with the totl astell&kern dap. they reckon it's all you need with this can - no need for head amp and dac separates.
