In that case I shouldn't lose too much selling them. An often overlooked benefit to buying something on sale or at a good deal. Hopefully this doesn't turn into my experience with the HD700 (buying at full price of $1000, selling at $500 after MSRP price drop to $650). Speaking of the HD700, these are at least definitively better than the HD700 right?

Certainly. K812 is my 2nd favorite dynamic (above all the planar magnetics as well), but it's no HD800.

Thanks for your clarification, MacedonianHero:)

I just discovered that AKG has set the retail price for the K812 at $1800 in Canada....so AKG can go to hell

I've done that. It pairs very nicely. I've been so relaxed I've dozed off a couple of times listening to Enya off that combo.

Just found another great review of the K812. Check out the 6 moons audio review, very fair and balanced comparison with the HD800.

$2000 for D7000s? Didn't those go for like $1000 then they were cut to $600ish?

When I do my review on these, I think I'll be quite critical on them since I want them to sound as good as the HD800 with less than optimal amping (Schiit Vali). I really expect these to be at least 95% of the HD800 + Vali pairing. Main things I will be looking for are clarity, smoothness and lack of edginess, no annoying treble, and soundstage.

A sign from the Head-Fi gods? You had no choice! Haha.

On a serious note, the Vali probably will not pair well with the K812 because of the dampening factor?

8ohm output of the Vali into 36ohm resistence of the K812 without a flat phase response will change the frequency response and make it sound bad (theoretically).

I'm sure you're already aware of this, so let me know if there is additional factor I'm missing maybe? What else do you have to try the K812? Any other amps or DAPs laying around the house? I would hate for you get a weird K812 experience because of impedance issues.

This may be a sign from the Head-Fi gods for you to pick up an Auralic Taurus MkII  (consult Nomax our Oracle)

Sorry to hear about your cancellation. I totally understand how frustrating waiting can become, especially without any clear answers.

But on a brighter note, major congrats on the new Lehmann! Let us know how it sounds with the K812. :D

A good import from those reviews/histories is that you have to really know who is reviewing the headphone, and how much credibility they have. High post count and owning a lot of headphones doesn't mean they are going to be accurate. I find a review that person posted that coincides with gear I have owned, to compare for accuracy For example, calling the T1 "neutral" is a pretty clear flag to me, not to mention all the flaws the T1s have that were not pointed out.  Tyll's reviews and comments usually coincide with the measurements, and he's got a solid understanding on how technical factors affect the sound. I hold his reviews pretty high. I think when CSD's for the K812 pop up, we'll see a lot of oddities in the treble.

I 100% agree with this.  It just comes with time and experience, and of course attending meets helps if you can.  I still remember listening to your HE-6 setup at my first meet in San Diego in 2011, gaining a wealth of knowledge and experience in the process.  I take these experience and like you said compare them to reviewers impressions in order to form an idea of possible sound from impressions on gear I have yet to hear and it has served me very well so far.

It's an ongoing process, and a lot of buying and selling gear along the way.  In my experience and taste, I tend to align with the like of Purrin and like, and also highly value Project86's reviews.  This has landed me at my current setup of an Anedio D1 and recently acquired Eddie Current S7 and I couldn't be happier.  Just need to upgrade my K712, which has performed exceedingly well, despite me not being a huge fan of the older 7 series.  I'm hoping it will be an indication of the K812's performance.

Errr ... ummmm ... Well someone's gotta tell you. The HD800 isn't super neutral. It's noted for having quite an elevated treble. There are a lot of people experimenting with mods (on a $1500 headphone ) to help smooth out and lower the treble.

I was going to say the below, until I saw it posted.  My old R1 LCD-2 was the flattest I've seen to 1khz.  Though both are pretty extreme opposite examples, except the HD800 still has great bass, just not as much.  I'd say my current K712 is fairly neutral, besides a slightly elevated bass and the characteristic AKG "bump" around 2k.

I have yet to hear the Vali but it seems to have great reviews.  I have to suspect the K812 would be a little better with the Vali but I could be wrong.  At least at our upcoming meet, we will have no lack of proper amps to test both with, between your incoming Questyle and my S7.  Interesting to see how it pans out.

Schiit Vali is 6.5 ohms output impedance last I checked. Also have the Audioengine D3, though it says it has a 10 ohm output impedance. It works well enough with my M500. Only other quality headphone outputs are the headphone outs on my Emotiva DC-1. Not sure what the output impedance is though. Of course, I could always plug them into my Emotiva MiniX speaker amp. :veryevil: I don't think output impedance will be a problem there since it's designed for 8 ohms. Of course the amount of power is another question altogether. I tried it with the HD800 before and nothing was damaged though.

Oh yeah almost forgot to mention. I have the Questyle CMA800R coming in. It's supposed to work best with the HD800, and was in fact designed with it in mind, but it's supposed to have a really low output impedance, and people have used it with headphones like the TH900 as well. Knew I was forgetting something...

EPIC!

Let us know how the K812 is with that. I'm VERY curious about that amp. And I see now that you need to stay away from the forbidden site, cuz your wallet can't hold on much longer. Haha.

Thanks. Another pleasant surprise, I'm listening to Spotify Premium straight out of my iPad, and man it sounds pretty damn good. No prize winner, but nice.
