I think someone who has it and a suitable system should take the Tyll challenge and tell us with a straight face whether K812 is tizzy or Tyll is.

One person's tizz is another's "treble detail". Black, double-double....taste/preference.

Was it Martin Mull who said "Writing about music is like dancing about architecture"?

Honestly, I think people are afraid to take the test. No one who's spent a grand plus wants to know if it's true that K812 has limitations. And that's why I posed one of my earlier questions: even if it were true, would it affect listening?

Some of us are waiting for the AKG price drops thal always follow all their new offerings. Very satisfied with the 712 which I bought new for half of MSRP.

If you want to find out if the LCD-2 is "neutral" go read the 1000+ page LCD-2 thread (the original one that was shut down).

Now Let's get back to the love fest that is the K812 appreciation

I don't think so, Claritas. I'm still enjoying my 812. smily_headphones1.gif

I wouldn't want it any other way, but how does that address my point? If I had bought K812, the first thing I'd do is take it to a buddy of mine who has a supposedly better amp than my O2 along with Tyll's three test tracks that supposedly reveal the flaw in the treble and confirm or disconfirm his impressions. At a minimum, I'd learn if the bad measurements correspond to anything truly audible. The fact that no one has bothered suggests that people are afraid to test it.

I think people worry too much and listen not enough.

The headphone is already built and bought. Why test it? There is some obvious controversy regarding the treble but headphones are like EQ units, if it were to be changed, it would affect everything else that you don't want changed. I have lots of headphones that measure not so well but I still enjoy them, but I do understand why people who shell out big bucks for a supposed flagship do want everything to be just right. But there is no perfect headphone, there are always trade-offs.

I always use the analogy that it takes 10 parts to make a perfect headphone and the flagship designers are given a maximum of 8....so they have to use them based on each one's criteria of what constitutes the most important configuration of those parts.

I don't have to find out. There is objective evidence as well as my own experience. The LCD-2 is flat up to 1kHz, but then from there it drops like a rock. 1kHz is 15-20dB louder than 10kHz.

Oh I definitely agree the with you. I just did not want to stray off topic too much cuz that's a can of worms...

*my reference for neutral is the Focal Spirit Pro, and presumeably Paradox/UERM, and I "get" your comment when you said: at least AKG tried to make a neutral headphone. So I believe we're on the same page on this issue.

I'd also buy the K812 if it drops to half of its MSRP, would make for a decent portable headphone.

Neutral?  Focal Spirit Pro? This one?

Where is your logic and reasoning M13.  These are clearly not neutral.

Well yeah that's the graph and my logic is that I've listened to them and they're awesomely neutral. Haha. Give them a try if you're curious (or not whatever :p)

*also check out the raw measurements (not compensated) from Innerfidelity vs. flat speaker measurements in a well treated room (It's in the Spirit Pro Review ;)). BTW, the same man who created that graph you're using says the FSP is one of the most neutral headphones he's ever heard and put them up on his Wall of Fame as a reference studio monitor.

You're missing my point M13.  You can't agree that the HD800 is neutral when you clearly state that the Focals are neutral.  While we're on the topic of 812 and neutrality this is important.

Which one is it M13?  It can't be both...not even subjectively.

Well despite my rhetoric on why not to get the K812 right now, I went for it today. Why the sudden change of heart? I got to work today and started listening to the KEF M500. Perhaps I'm reaching, even hoping that the K812 could sound the way the HD800 did at work Friday. Oh well I guess we'll see. Time to sell my HE-500 and ESP950 though. I don't touch those anymore.
