AKG K812 Pro - Page 77

I heard this headphone at a hi end meet. I was really dissapointed. Altho I never got to know what amp they were running but it probably wasn't a good one and it sounded like bad quality recordings.

So feels like it needs good gear if that's the case to sound near any decent.

I think knowing the specific gear you listened to would be more helpful.

Yea I know, there were no staff around at that moment I were standing there...

But yea I think it was cause of bad gear it sounded that bad, otherwise that pricetag would be so insane.

How did it sound bad? You should describe it a little bit so we know what you're talking about.

Harsh sounding, lacking in bass. I know Akg usually doesn't have much bass but I guess the bass should be better sounding than my q701 atleast!

Interesting. I don't think even an iPhone could make the K812 sound that terrible. It has significantly more bass than the Q701, goes deeper with better impact and presence. That K812 might be another broken one floating around. Haha. Let the store know it needs to be sent in for repair, and go audition the K812 at a different store.

Oh well ;p Strange then, I really didn't like it. Dad thought it got potential but agreed that it did not sound as good as it should been.

How much better is the AKG K812 than the AKG Q701 based on your listening experience?

The K812 is back! I just unpacked my replacement phones and have them running in now. Sounded really good out of the box, but based on my first pair the sound opened up a bit more after 30 hours or so of break-in.
I'm really glad to have them back. I really like the smooth, clear sound and the soundstage on these. Very natural sound and outstanding comfort.

In terms of just power:

iPhone outputs something like 30mW? And the AK120 does about 1.5Vrms, and the X3 does about 2.828Vrms (8V p-p). I have no idea what the minibox and standard cards for HifiMan outputs.

But yeah in terms of current/voltage the X3 isn't too bad for a DAP. Now, sound quality is a different matter and I'm sure this is where the AK120 easily comes out on top, not to mention the HifiMan DAPs. Haha.

I think the real question I need to ask you is: "was there a big difference between the HifiMan DAPs to your desktop rig in terms of scale and dynamics?"

Ah... That is indeed the interesting question. Frankly, for the 901 off a minibox amp card, it gives my desktop rig a run for the money. That's why I currently use the 901 in the office with the 812.

Okay. Thanks for the info. That's great news for me then. Haha.
