I think at this point we're all in for a disappointment. It will be hard for him to top it off after all this build up and anticipation.

If he never posts the 4th installment, there's enough stalwarts and trolls here to keep this thread going into a part 3, just like the Stax thread.

Just discovered this thread and read through all of it.

Subscribed. I can't wait to see how this turns out!

I am going to agree with an earlier poster as to the cause of the smell.

Deadmau5, and I don't mean Joel...

Maybe the original owner tried the Sriracha Tori mod for the HD800 and ended up using super fermented kimchi instead.

It is possible that sweat can end up smelling like ammonia if you have a high-protein diet. Some medical conditions IIRC can result in obnoxious-smelling sweat.

Maybe the smell is from something used to clean the headphones after they were abused or, as other people have suggested, were found on a deceased person?

Because it's only a bad smell for unrefined noses. wink.gif Those things are gold.

Explains why there was no "water" damage.

Anyway, I just thought of something my gf told me.. the sun tends to do a good job of killing off smells (by killing off the bacteria) lol. Apparently thats another reason why drying clothes out on a line is such a good idea? Dunno. The idea makes sense I guess. Even better if you can borrow someone's tanning bed LOL.

The few descriptors he's thrown out seem to indicate more of a chemical smell than that of organic waste ... "alkaline" etc. ... perhaps an HD800 owner could put their cans up as a prize for whomever correctly guesses the source? I'm sure I could suss it if I went back and scoured the thread (the OP himself said he might have given up a spoiler here and there) . .. but enjoying a good yarn, myself ... I'm just gonna wait.

;-)

Wonderful idea, I think the OP should definitely award the HD800 to the person who manages to guess the source.

Or possibly, it was something organic that someone else tried to clean up using chemicals, which would seem to have made it even worse lmao.

What's that smell?? The way its described, to me sounds like something dead. Decomposing....

maybe invest in one of these for when they're worn... It'll be a look!

A mouse died in the box is my vote.

Or else the answer has something to do with whisky, and that's why OP had the expertise required to identify the smell...

I vote that someone puked whisky all over it :)

Since "*Warning* Prepare thyself, not for the faint of heart" is in the title, it's probably something really, really gross/frightening, i.e. not something simple like sweat or urine. The smell of a deceased person/animal seems likely.

There is also another bodily fluid we forgot about... considering that most audiophiles are male, and we keep speaking of "eargasms" ;)
