Nirvana In Utero 20th Anniversary Edition: Remixed, Remastered and in Hi-res on HDtracks!

To say that Nirvana's third and ultimately final studio album In Utero was 1993's most polarizing record would be the understatement of a decade. The unadorned sonic rawness of Steve Albini's recording laid bare every primal nuance of the most confrontational yet vulnerable material Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl would ever record. And with its 1991 predecessor Nevermind having sold some 30 million copies, singlehandedly returning honest rock ’n’ roll to the top of the pop charts.

This Super Deluxe Edition features more than 70 remastered, remixed, rare and unreleased recordings, including B-sides, compilation tracks, never-before-heard demos and live material (including the complete "Live & Loud" show from Seattle's Pier 48 on December 13, 1993) featuring the final touring lineup of Cobain, Novoselic, Grohl, and Pat Smear, plus never-before-released bonus material.

On the remastering of In Utero by Steve Rooke:

  • The original mix and the 2013 remix versions were mixed down to 30ips half inch non-Dolby analogue tape, Steve Albini's preferred format.

  • When mastering the CD & Digital versions the masters were played from a Studer analogue machine into the EMI TG analogue transfer desk.

  • All EQ'ing etc was done using the TG desk and when we had the desired sound the tracks were transferred via a Benchmark A to D converter onto our Sadie workstation.

  • Once on the workstation the tracks were listened to and any unwanted artifacts removed. Any clicks such as plectrum noises and guitar switch noises, etc. were left in as these were felt to be part of the performance.

  • The final stage of the mastering process for the digital formats was to play the albums through a real time digital limiter to increase volume level.

  • As we wanted to keep as much dynamic as possible the limiting was minimal as we felt the album would suffer if heavily limited.

I only purchased one album from HDTracks in the past but I'm still wondering why you guys allow  downloading every purchase once.Is there no way to host a library (like for instance Steam and iTunes do) so that if I delete my track or it gets lost, I don't have to bother you to "reset" my purchase and download it again?

I bought Super Deluxe boxed version (sorry HDtracks), and well this is the only remasters of Nirvana that I truly Love.

Remasters on Nevermind and Bleach was a disaster for me, as they had much lower dynamic range and a lot more loudness, and actually sounded worse than the original.

However remaster of In Utero sounds fantastic!

I really loved 2013 remix versions!! For example in Very Ape, Serve the Servants and other songs- I hear new mixes and actually I like how they sound, it's like fresh air for a Nirvana fan.

Remaster of the album version of the songs sound a little bit clearer that original release and I love that they left the few sounds (like some mumblings or noise of turning on of guitar amps on the background).

Overall a very good remaster and a nice package, would recommend to a Nirvana fan or to a newcomer to Grunge Rock.

Hi DarKu,

Thanks for the feedback.  The Nirvana In Utero is an excellent mix hopefully next time you will pick it up on HDtracks.. ;)

In regards to the other albums, I am not sure if you are referring to the HDtracks releases specifically but either way we are simply a hi-res retail store and do not participate in the recording, remixing or remastering of any albums we offer.

We do love when we get a different hi-res or audiophile master but that is not always the case.  And in the end, whether you like the mix/mastering of an album or not, getting it in a hi-res formant (ie 96/24, 192/24) is still better than the mp3 or even CD quality.

Hi Singapura,

Thank you for your input.  We are always trying to refine, innovate and make HDtracks better.  Although it is not always easy we are open to new features and this is definitely one which we will take into consideration.

Thanks!

Hey no worries,

I got from you Van Halen and all The Doors studio albums all in 24/96 so yeah, I love you :)

I understand very good that you are only selling music and you are not involved in mastering/mixing or something like this. But still there are some albums in hi-rez 96 or 192khz that do not sound that awesome, and the culprit of all of this is of course modern mastering and the loudness war, more loudness = less dynamic range.

Btw nice that you joined head-fi, a place where we talk a lot about audio gear and not so often about music :( the soul of our passion, have a great time here.

Yeah, very very true!

HDtracks you should offer your music anywhere in the world as we are prepared to pay but we cannot.

I have used fake IP address just to buy from you, forgot to mention such and important issue.

We want to buy but we cannot with local IP addresses, if we are willing to pay, you should offer your music worldwide.

We are working on offering more of our catalog outside of the US, some titles are available already, but it depends on territory rights.  It is different for every album.
