I am too long invested in the Apple ecosystem to use anything but an iPod for the player, but I am totally open for amp ideas. I would like something with great battery life (20 hours minimum) and low impedance, good for sensitive iems, and no hiss/noise floor.

I had a JDS C241 that I really liked but didn't last long enough for me. I have another one that had great battery life but is unshielded and hence gets a lot of electronic interference.

Thoughts/recommendations?

I also have the JDSLabs and like it so far; but am thinking of switching to the RSA SR-71B that seems to be awesome and unanimous in the reviews here for IEM: no ground noise at all and an awesome autonomy!

I would not recommend the ALO MK3+ as ALO confirmed to me the presence of noise with sensitive IEM..

I suggest either the RSA Protector if you want portable or the SR-71B for desktop. A wonderful tube sound from either but you will need balanced cables to bring the best out of a balanced amplifier as both are.

Soren, I also wonder if The Wizard will come up with a portable amp again or maybe an amp/dac combo. Good battery life, carbon fiber (maybe optional), relatively compact size and suitable for ciem life can be a winner.

I am one of the only people with an R1 who has posted here. Battery life is amazing and it sounds great, but picks up a lot of EM interference in electrically noisy environments. That is why I am looking for something more shielded but with similar properties.

The return of the Wizard is indeed a game changer event in the portable audio life, isn't it ;)

Interestingly, I was just in NYC last weekend, although I did not have universal versions of the CIEMs with me. I have a few friends in the city I try to visit at least a couple times a year. Perhaps next time I am there we can meet so you can have a listen. Hopefully we also get a chance to attend a meet/show or two in that area within the next year as well.

There's one mid November although pretty short notice. We usually have meets twice a year. One late fall/early winter and another around the summer time. I would definitely be interested in a listen. At this stage I'm looking at a 4S or 5S depending on how reviews turn out as I haven't had the chance to own a silicone custom yet.

Yeah, November 9th is really short notice at this point. The meet next summer seems more feasible, although I suspect I will be there in the spring so maybe we can fit you in then. Both the 4S and 5S are in the process of being reviewed, I am looking forward to the release of both!

You really should travel to London this weekend as the sales are on and maybe you could stop by the UK Head-Fi meet, with your universal versions...;)

Haha, I wish! I've only been to London once (last December, spent ~4 weeks) and loved it even though it was quite cold.

I'm looking forward to people sharing their impressions of the universal versions. I really hope Ultimate Mango will swing by to compare the universal to to custom version.
