I suppose 2000 NZ$ is the final price. %15 GST is not that bad though, Spain has 21% for example.

Back to 1990 they were USD 1000 = DEM 1500, a lot of money.

$600 in 1989 >= $6000 today

post #892 of 978

isn't tax included in the price in NZ?

Not even close..

As far as I know, transportation, the import tax over imported value ( include transport ) and importer margin are the most significant parts in the price determination and then retailer margin and local VAT. Also, differences in currency value, say between EUR and USD or else, play a part, as they try to cover every possible lost they may be facing on the market.

I'm amazed the HD800 is still held in such high regard on head-fi. Combination of high price setting and consumerism has lead most people to believe "more expensive is superior". Then turn around and need to perform one of many mods to it, and add distortion in the audio chair (by tube amplifiers) to have a headphone where the treble doesn't stick out like a sore thumb.

Can't tell if serious. The HD800 will and continue to be held in such regard due to the fact that there are no other headphone within and near it's price category as neutral as it is (excluding the K812 as no official comparisons and impressions exist). And no expensive does not mean better nor superior, frankly I don't even know where you pulled that out of as it is completely unrelated to my previous post. Your last sentence made me grin a bit, look around, it applies to every headphone, every type of transducer not just the HD800's, no perfect headphone exist on the objective scale of FR measurement.

The K1k was never $600 new back in the day, the K1k did in fact sell for $500-600 almost a decade ago here on headfi and ebay. We're talking numbers less than 2.

Bonjour!

(ok I'm from uk, but I learned a bit of french at school. Unfortunately I've never needed to use it. Until now... Bonjour! Je Mange une banane!! Monsieur! Le Autobus! Avec Noir!! Je nu se qua!!!!)

*Cough* ok getting serious again. I bet that if the HD800's were being released this month they would be priced more than £1000 now... And everyone would be blown away with them. Apart from that pesky peak! :rolleyes: I think that they are still relevant and will be for a long time to come.

But I'm as hopeful as most folks here that we at last have a nice alternative with the K812.

It is a shame (at least for us with balanced gear) that they can't be balanced as easily as HD800.
