3. Comparing the AKG K701/702 to the HD800 is just a plain joke, the 701's are brighter than the HD800. Yes the HD800 does have a peaky treble but you cut this down by doing the Anaxmod and powering it with proper amplification. Throwing tube amplification at the HD800 doesn't fix the problem.
4. The HD800's are studio headphones I know of worldwide famous DJ's and some musicians/engineers that use it for monitoring. Tyll can't recommend the HD800's enough for monitoring purposes only.
5. The HD800 isn't some headphone you can plug into a pos amp or ipod and expect it to sound good.

AKG K701 brighter than HD800? what?

post #844 of 985

The overall tone of the K701 is defo brighter.  But that one peak on the HD800 is higher. The HD800 dips quite significantly in the lower treble where as the AKG is the opposite.

K701's is one of my fave phones but I've always had to equalise the treble down. I've never had to with the HD800's.

Sounds like this has been fixed with both the K712 and K812 though :)

^yeah. Bright is as term something that has to do with emphasised high mids.

I wouldnt say completely fixed, at least with K712 Pro... upper mids and treble is still the biggest weakness. It's the significantly more present bass that helps to mask it, almost successfully. The bass to mids presence is what makes the phone sound darker than HD800 while K701/K702/Q701 are brighter.

BTW K812 does not sound like K701.

@SleepyOne

The K812 Pro sounds other than K701, K712 Pro!

..

This thread has too much K701 stuff going on. The K812 is a solid deviation from that sound signature.

EDIT: I still remember the head fi days when the HD-650 fans complain about the K702 treble. Today the same HD-650 fans got the HD-800 and they're still complaining about the K702 treble. :k701smile:

I am really curious about how the K812 will compare to the HD800 and T1. I'm guessing maybe somewhere in between.

We all hope the K812 will be a step up over the HD800 and justified the new AKG flagship hps higher price. I'm curious to see how much flat and natural the K812 will be compare to the HD-800. :happy_face1:
