Could be - though AKG seem to already have released headphones that make use of a small rather than large peak at 3 kHz as per that study. Notably the K550.

The results of the study could be applied to older headphones with reductive EQ at 3 kHz.

How did you guess? It's a nice rock though.

Only time I got the plasticy sound from an AKG is with a K701 when used out of an old Yamaha receiver.

I was comparing it with an HD-600 at the time..

Seen as the plasticky/artificial was very obvious to me when, for example, using a Luxman P-1u, probably means that we are simply looking for different signatures. And the fact that I found a similar artificiality in the K550, doesn't make me hopeful for these.

But I would love for these to be completely amazing and restore my faith in AKG.

What? HD800 are more toward AKG signature than anything they made before and that’s why so many folks simply adore them, especially with extra clarity and air they have. I am not saying they are alike, but comparing to HD650 its like day and night.

Any chance one of your test tracks was a sine sweep, or that you could otherwise describe the frequency response? Also, did AKG present any graphs, preferably waterfall and preferably in comparison to some other AKG model?

Just read it, THANKS, but how close they are to K1000? I am not interested in K comparison as it is what it is, simply expect much better performance, period.

THX

I hope K812 will be better than K1000, if they won't... Why do we need another mediocre AKG model? Actually I liked K550 very much for its balanced sound, but it's mid-fi after all...

For sure you have not heard k1000. Normal headphones can't beat them in some areas and because of that so many people like them and some don't. Akg K812 are just usual headphones in terms of construction. So it's not about better or worse..

If they are better than K1000, AKG should name them K1012

You right, but Harman have already stated, that K812 is the best in history of AKG and the rumors say about 1000+$ price of K812, so who knows... :)

I meant I would be glad if K812 will beat K1000 in most areas. It's hard to imagine that K812 will beat K1000 in terms of soundstage, right? :) As for me, I want HD800 with that gorgeous AKG look :)

But best at what and by which metric?

our friend Norbert (Lehmann Audio) has the K812 pro in hand. I'll try to get a pic and some impressions for us.

My translated short review:

Recently, I had the extraordinary pleasure to be able to test the new AKG K812 Pro!
I use the same test samples of music, that I use for all my tests.

In advance, so a significant difference I did not expect, in foretime I heared some other headphones in the same league (or higher).

The new K812 Pro has a very good fit and my head, the inner diameter of the ear pads is about the same as the K7 .. series, the entire headphone is made of very high quality materials. The capsule is free to see inside, the Pro K812 is more open than you can judge by the photos.

Some technical data can be found here:
http://harmanprogroup.blogspot.co.at/2013/10/harmans-akg-k812-reference-headphones.html

The AKG K812 Pro offers everything what you are looking for - profound clearly contoured bass, middle and treble well recorded. With its resolution, fine dynamics and openness, he sets standards.

Compared to K712 Pro
The K812 Pro definitely plays in a different league. I did not expect that the difference so clearly fancy. The K812 has a higher resolution, more airiness and a clearly contoured bass. Although the K712 Pro is a very good headphone too (in his league and price range)!

Comparison with an another flagship
Both are similar in some respects. The Pro K812 offers more room and brought some deep bass clear accurate.
The sound stage is more open and free with the K812 Pro
The headphone from B. are not circumaural for my ears, I have the feeling it sounds trough a short pipe (in some forums is called the can, tin effect - german 'Dosen-Effekt').

To compare with the flagship of S., the timeframe was not long enough.

The music samples, I brought, playd with a notebook with professional audio software, a professional studio DAC and Crown amplifiers.

The Pro AKG products are designed and manufactured in Vienna, the AKG lifestyle ( consumer) products coming from China

At home, I listened to some of the songs included in the test .

For D7000 - which sounded badly discolored despite his good treble reproduction. I feel the difference this time much stronger than when I compared the D7000 with the K1000, Q701, K712 or some time ago with the T90. On this day I could not hear with the D7000 , it was not a relaxing pleasure with him.

PS: My phone is the instantaneous standard K712 Pro - then came the Q701 with the same earpads as it has the K712 Pro. A Pro K812 headphone would be my dream!

PPS: Please excuse my english translation, my native language is german.
