Closed headphones - upgrade on the Momentums?

Can anyone suggest a closed headphone that would be an upgrade for the Momentums, in the < $600 range?

I like the Momentums, but would prefer something with a punchier sound.   Am ok listening to it through an amp - have an Alo National, an Audinst MX2 and a FiiO E12 for this.

Intended usage - for on-site listening when I am traveling and staying in a hotel (I have a pair of LCD2s and an Audio-GD amp for home use).

Type of music - thundering symphonies, heavy metal and rock.

I would recommend AKG K550 if you don't mind the size, and bare in mind there are some new unreviewed models following then now.

If you want something smaller the KEF M500 are great.

I auditioned the K550 and Momentum for portable use. I chose the Sony 7520, really combined the best of both in a portable (and comfortable) package. I've heard good things about the KEF500 too.

I have actually quite enjoyed my Denon ah-d600. They are not the most neutral can out there but have a pretty fun sound. They are also extremely comfortable. :D

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.  The AKG does look interesting, but I am wondering if it is going to be merely a lateral step (different sound signature) vs an improvement.

The Beyers... based on the reviews I've read, they always come across as polite and analytical.   To me, a good classical/symphonic headphone isnt about soundstaging or such:  it is about delivering that visceral punch when the orchestra is in full blast (I've never been to a live concert where things did NOT get muddy at this point).

I find neutrality over-rated anyway :)

The AKG K550 is a different sound signature when compared vs the Momentum. However, if you want a punchier sound, fast and well extended you are going in the right direction with the 550.

^^ Thanks for that, Fabio.  The 550 is inexpensive enough to make it worth giving it a go.

Cheers!

If you have an LCD2 and you like it, definitely get the B&W P7. I'm also an LCD-2 owner and I find the P7 much better sounding than the somewhat bright and thin sounding K550 and the Denon D600. The KEF M500 is really good too, but not quite as good, it has some unnaturalness to its treble.

For the price of the P7, you might as well get a Shure 1540

Oh so yea teh Shure 1540 would be a great option! There is also the Kenwood KH1000, not a very well know headphone but a VERY nice one. Additionally there is the W1000x [which I own] as wel, actually there is a Modded W1000x for sale here on headFi. Imo that might be your best bet!

I modded my w1000x and honestly.,.. it destroyed the Akg K550 along with a LOT of other 300 ish closed headphones,
