I owned a pair of UE 18 Pro and I needed to refit twice to get the sound right. I honestly feel universals like SE535 and W4 fit well to my ear that isolation is not even an issue. I believe the majority of people should have "normal" ears and that universal should fit fine.

I don't dis custom as I would love to get a pair someday.  However, I fall into slick530 category that universal fits fine for me with the Comply Tips, so I don't really need to go with the trouble of custom IEMs.

I have large ear canals. It's a mixed blessing. I have trouble finding tips large enough in some styles (I need size LL Sony Hybrids for my left ear). The upside is that if I can find tips that fit, the sound is pretty much unimpeded through my ear canals. I have several customs and for me the difference between universal and custom isn't that great. I have the Roxanne UF and with the large JVC Spiral Dot tips, the Roxanne UF sounds like full-sized open cans. The soundstage is open and airy.

This is my 3rd time sending back the Rox.

1) Refit

2) Channel imbalance

3) Shell cracked

Turnaround for each is about 1.5 months. Its reaching my last straw should the 4th attempt fails.

I'll probably have to ask Jaben to get a refund. The QC is not funny.

I'm solely referring to JH build quality and customer service.

The sound itself is fantastic and probably one of the best sound signature I've heard, referencing from Fitear 335DW, 435,334, JH 13, 16, FAD Lab1, Shure 846, Westone W60, AKG3003, Dita Truth Edition, Noble K10, Rooth LSX etc.

I agree, the sound is superb and there's little to fault in that regard, but the rest is a headache. I'll be sending mine in for a fourth refit, so I know your pain.

I heard that some CIEM company has a machine that scans your ears directly (if you go in person) without having to do impressions. Was it JH? Anybody tried it?

My experience with customs so far is very positive and the main reason to go with customs (IEMs or just tips, whatever brand) is comfort. I have huge issue finding a right tips for my Senns IE8, my Ethymotics work best with Shure olives, but even with thous after an hour or two they are getting uncomfortable, while smaller size doesn't provide good seal. Roxannes so far, are very comfortable, and they sit very securely in my ears.

I can't comment on sound quality difference between customs and universals much, as I listened to universal Roxannes maybe for 5 minutes and I was quite impressed with them at that time, and they sounded different from customs I have now. For some reason, the universals I tried sounded a bit V shaped in comparison to my customs.

The reason why I'm going for the custom route is it gives me a less hassle application; and a better seal. My ears are small too (I'm a Hongkongian). One ear's hole being slightly smaller, and shorter to reach the 1st corner in the canal than the other. I used to use two tips in different size to have a good fit. I'm currently using a custom moulded tips (self made using food-grade silicon, ugly but works) so that is a lesser issue now.

It gives more consistent depth insertion, also.

Given the experience, I cannot imagine to even send the Rox back and hopelessly wait for the refit.

Getting my UniRox's today! Will post some impressions. I have been using custom UE10 Pros for 9 years so looking forward to it. I use the Smyth Realiser and record the output for portable use. I usually tweak the EQ using the Realiser, Jriver (which i use to play a song to the Realiser), and/or my DAP, so the native FR curve of the IEM isn't that important. But extension, speed, transparency, etc. are very important. That is why Stax pair the best with the Realiser (i use the included Stax system right now for home use). Hope the Roxanne's do well.

I wonder does anyone has a balanaced Rox with AK240 vs Single Ended with Hugo. How will the sound compare?

Still hunting for the best pair that match Rox.

Balanced roxanne custom on AK240 is better than SE roxanne for staging etc but the Hugo still sounds better SE.  I've only had the balanced cable for a day and have been listening to flacs.

Wow, i just listened to the universal Roxanne's and no matter which tip is used they sound way too veiled. I couldn't even fix it with EQ. I used to have the HD650 and remember never fully getting past the lack of clarity. Same feeling. My Stax phones and UE10's are much more realistic. I doubt burn-in will help. I also doubt going custom would help as i got a good seal. But curious to know if anyone who tried both found the customs to be clearer.

Is there a CIEM i should look into if i want an improvement over the UE10 but with a similar sound signature to the UE10 or Stax?

Kantana,

The Hugo still sound better on SE for your ears vs the AK240 Bal out and balance cable. I'm reluctant to splurge on the AK240 if the bal output doesnt match Hugo SE output.

If earphonesolutions are selling bal cable, will we be looking at other cable makers churning out cables too?

It's going to be hard to match the Hugo SQ for a device much smaller than it.  The Hugo has a very decent dac with an amp more powerful than the AK240.  However the Hugo still needs a DAP to connect to it which means a much bulkier load.  The balanced output is good on the AK240, if you doubt it try running the HD800 from it, it won't be the best driven but still decent sound from such a small device.

Earphone solutions is selling the balanced cable from the AKR03 which is supplied by JH.  We are still awaiting cable makers to release their 3rd party cables for Roxannes.  Last I heard they were all waiting for parts from JH.

I had the same impression for about 2 weeks with Roxanne, keep listening for another 2 weeks, I think you will start to appreciate it. I actually bought the Rox and SE846 at the same time, sold the SE846 and kept the roxanne, if not for the bad feedbacks with JH service, i would have pulled my trigger on the custom roxanne with no question.
