It sure is not about power which is what an amp is suppose to provide since Roxanne like any iems are very easy to drive and don't require much power.

I suggest you better look for a better DAP or source than a portable amp.

Well, I wouldn't say that I'm fixating on finding an amp.  Really, it was just a question to see what folks were using.  And I'm pretty happy with my AK240 as a DAP.  Again, innocent curiosity.  Different strokes and all...

In my experience, the quality of amplification is very important for totl iem's, less so of course for lower end iems. And totl portable amps will most certainly be of higher quality than what whatever amp can be implemented in the limited space of a DAP.

If I were you, I'd be looking into getting a balanced 2.5mm connection instead of an amp.

That is going to end soon, if not already started. Look at the latest DAPs from different manufacturers. They are starting to put a quality amp in their DAP. Look at DX90, X5, Calyx-M and (cringing) AK240.

I have a DX50 and built-in amp is not up to the task of providing a clean and good quality signal to my ciems which is why I use an amp like many people has with DX50. But with the beefed up amp on DX90 using an external amp with my Roxanne and JH16 doesn't make sense anymore. It can even power full-size can and sounded very good as well.

Good point; something I was considering since it does seem that folks appreciate using the balanced option from the AK240 (I just got it, so haven't delved into that side of things yet).  Any recommended vendors for that connection?  I understand it's not exactly considered common.

Have used my leckerton uha760 with good results, but I also like them straight from the AK120, too.

Generally in most cases, the amp section of a DAP simply wont be as good as a dedicated totl portable amp. By no means is it necessarily necessary to add a portable amp, but more often than not, adding an amp brings improvements that definitely aren't insignificant. ymmv

You could do it yourself.
Or, send a cable to a cable maker.
They can either install a balanced 2.5 or cut the Roxanne 4 pin off and use it on a new custom cable.
Teds headfood can reterminate it to a 2.5 trrs

I think toxic was offering the custom cable with existing Roxanne 4 pin plugs.

I have a UHA-6SMKII and loved it with DX50 + Roxanne especially with AD797 opamp. Ever since I got the DX90, I have never touched it again except for some quick comparison.

Yeah, I was using it (the 760) with the dx50 but the AK120 does not need it really. But it is a good amp and has its uses...:beerchug:

I would agree that getting a better DAP will get the most improvements.

I don't have my Roxanne yet when I demoed AK120. But I never like how it sounded on my JH16 compared to DX50+C5D at the time.

Having made the previous comment, I don't think there is a better portable DAP than AK240. Sorry.

Good sound after only 3-4 hours straight out of iPhone.

I got black cable with super nuts smily_headphones1.gif

I've had a couple pair of the JH13's for about four years (different cables), enjoyed those earphones as much as any headphone. Just took possession of a Roxanne Universal, using the Triad L3 and NuForce HAP-100 am getting very good results. I get a great seal with the silicones as my ear aperture is quite large. I'm impressed..... Can't wait until Drew (Moon Audio) gets it in gear and makes a cable.
