Would you say these (or other custom in-ears) are worth these price tags?  The nicest IEMs I have are my Sony MDR-EX1000, which are great.  How would these, or even the JH16 or JH13 compare to my Sony?  Will I be in audio nirvana? biggrin.gif

I am using a Zana Deux with a Beyer T1 for my home setup.  How would the sound (detail, imaging, etc.) compare?

I have a T1 and compared to JH16 the detail retrieval is I say on par with each other. JH16 excels in speed specially on high tempo music. To be honest I like the bass impact on my JH16 although the T1 overall sounds more neutral.

I am finding myself listening to JH16 more than T1 on my desktop. So I'm expecting better with Roxanne not by a huge margin but defintely not worse than JH16 I suppose.

The IEMs I used and has wowed me before now sounded tinny and can't quite match the JH16 when it comes to detail retrieval and clarity and impact in the bass region.

So yeah I can say once you go customs there is no turning back. That should server as a warning ...lol

I hope these are worth it!  My Roxanne will be the CF version too.  Really looking forward to them now.  The EX1000 does not sound half bad, I am playing them out of my Sony F807 Walkman and they are already excellent.  Can't imagine what the Roxanne will be like!

LoL, I am sure you will be pleased..

Now we all need to get a better DAP like RWAAK120...

That depends on your priorities when it comes to music listening. If you want utmost clarity and detail retrieval, you'll be delighted with mult-armature based IEMs (btw, you're not required to go custom, as the Roxanne are also available in a universal version).

If you want instrument realism and natural timbre, there aren't many IEMs out there that can touch the EX1000 imo. If you want an expansive and open soundstage, I don't think any of the closed customs can give you that. I've heard a few and they all have excellent separation and imaging, but within a rather confined space. The EX1000 with their vents and offset driver placement just have a technical advantage in that regard that custom in-ear design can't rival.

But on the other hand, just about all custom IEMs beat the EX1000 easily in isolation and are much better suited for outside use, since they're not prone to wind noise like the Sonys. Bottom line, there are pros and cons to all IEMs, regardless of price and whether they're customs or universals.

Another important aspect is sound signature. Why even compare the EX1000 to a JH16, when the former is a rather neutral (and even slightly bright) sounding phone and the latter a wet dream for bassheads. They cater to very different preferences, so it will likely be your sound signature preference and not technical aspects that will make you choose one over the other.

Oh, and last but not least, here's a few questions you might want to ask those who hand out generous ratings and recommendations on just released gear:

- Have you actually heard the things you're talking about?

- If so, for how long and in which surroundings did you audition?

- Are your comparisons to other gear based on A/B listening from the same source, or just on memory?

Good luck for your quest! :smile_phones:

That's equivalent to $40 bucks max. (I think I recall another Head-fier getting his done entirely free in Paris! LOL)

 Really, £25 in Central London ?

Tell me where, I'd be keen to know

This is very, very true.

I have read countless of folks touting this IEM and that, bashing CIEMs to no end, claiming universals sound as good as CIEMs (rarely that is the case and its mainly a factor of how well you can get a seal which for the overwhelming majority of ears is difficult whether they know it or not), etc.

But AS SOON AS that person gets a pair of their own....it's truly an aural epiphany.

Three biggest downfalls of CIEMs: cost, resale, headstage (be curious if the Roxanne can improve this)

can't agree more.

remembered the day that I tried my own JH16,

totally different from what I heard with the universal demo.

When I decided to go custom I did it with the premise of keeping them for as long as they are working and keep me happy. I suppose in the long run resale value and cost is a moot point. I'll rather have few (1 or 2) top expensive high quality CIEMs than several good but compromised IEMs
