DON'T DO IT!!!! I know what you mean about trying the headphones first before you buy them, which for good reason everyone around here recommends, but when the nearest store that carry's even one of the headphones your interested in is 4+ hours away, it's not really a viable option. Which is why I check with retailers first and make sure they have a decent return policy and then just bite the bullet and see how it goes!

'twas a joke :) I like music too much to ever buy some BbD :)

I know what you mean about demos and finding retailers with a decent returns policy :(

Problem is that I'm still stuck in that 'this sounds great, but what if..' frame of mind. Which is great for retailers but really, really bad for my wallet/ego/enjoyment of what I'm listening to...

In Germany it is easy :)

You can send back the stuff within 14 days without any charge and you will get back the transport costs as well :) .

Yeah some retailers aren't so great for buying from if your not sure though. Audeze for example charges 15% restocking fee, plus you pay return shipping. So if you bought the LCD-3's on a whim and found out they weren't for you, you could be paying $320 or so just for a trial, that makes it very difficult if you've got no local dealers around you to give them a listen first.

I also get hum with my EF-6 and LCD-X. It's not dependent on the input source or gain; it's the 60Hz.
Doesn't hum at all with the 6s and 5LEs.

Thanks. Glad I'm not going crazy.

Speaking of which...

I got a message about a bad cable and decided to try the 4-pin connector on the EF-6. Not only was the hum more pronounced, but the headphones seem to be much better than on the other cable. I thought the EF-6 was supposed to be a singled-ended amp and that there would be no real difference between the two. I'm not sure that it's not just that the volume is a bit louder out of the 4-pin output, but it really seems like the headphones have opened up a lot and the bass hits harder. Can you compare the single-ended and 4-pin  on your EF-6 and see if you have the same observation?

End game for moi.

That's great news! So, will the LCD-X and V200 go well with my warm-sounding Rega DAC? The LCD-2s sound AMAZING out of the pair. Will the LCD-X gel well with them as well? Please let me know 'cause I want to upgrade sometime soon! :L3000:

I demoed the LCD-2s some months ago, but didn't have the V200 at the time. But from what many very experienced head-fiers are saying, the LCD-Xs are more neutral then the LCD-2s. I would imagine that if the combo you now have is not 'too warm' for you, then the X would not be too warm. But best to purchase from a seller who offers a 30 day return policy. Sounds like an awesome system you've got there. Personally, I could well imagine the LCD-X would sound sublime.

Look what arrived today!

I'm really hoping this is an end game system for me...well, after the upgraded tubes arrive next week.

Wow--looking forward to hearing that pup at the DC meet.  The WA22 is on my list of must-hear amps with the LCD-X. Is your tube set biased towards any particular sound signature?

Right now, it's all just the stock tubes. I have upgrades en route that should improve the soundstage and smoothness without being overly warm or thick.

The RCA 5U4G should be the first to arrive. I'm looking forward to getting rid of the grainy Shungyang rectifier.

All that said, even with the stock tubes and 2 hours of burn in, I'm loving the sound so far.

Interested in hearing your thoughts on the WA22 compared to the Mjolnir (and Vali) if you still have it. The Mjolnir is a bit leaner than I'd like with the LCD-X, but I don't dig the thick fuzzy tube sound. So I'm thinking a neutral highly resolving solid state or tube amp would do it for me. I spent the day over at Gary in MD's place auditioning DACs and listening to the LCD-X out of his Odyssey Cyclops amp via speaker taps. The Cyclops has a very clean neutral signature and is a pretty good match for the LCD-X, despite the massive overkill of 110W/channel.

End game system? HAAhahah..HAAhahah...there is never an end-game system! Yours looks like an end-game system (wow! looks beautiful!)...I bet it sounds like an end-game system (Woo + LCD-X = Heaven)...but there is never an end-game system.  Sooner or later you'll get the itch back! It's maybe an end-game system FOR THE NEXT YEAR, but that's about it!

First the new DAC, then the interconnect cables (let me try silver, let me try high-end copper), then the headphone replacement cable (i.e., moon audio dragon, ALO, double helix, or Toxic?), then the RCA rectifier could be bettered with the Western Electric one...it never ever ends.  Believe me...I'm living proof that it never ends!
