I wouldn't be thrilled to need a new amp and dac for every different headphone I decided to buy. :P

That's the question, isn't it? I like the LCD-3, but not enough to upgrade from my LCD-2. I'm looking for the Audeze voicing with a bit more air and treble resolution--but with the LCD-2's bass punch.  Fingers crossed that the LCD-X will fit the bill. My Gungnir is definitely probably staying, but I'm keeping an open mind about the Mjolnir.

For me, the weight of the -2 and -3 wasn't the problem as much as the sweat caused by the pads.  The vegan pads pretty much solved that for me.

I am settled.  I'm buying the LCD-XC next week.

I hope they get the grey rings back in before then!

Wow, where did you find a place to rent the LCD-3?

You can "check them out" from the Headphone Library (do a Google search for Headphone Library).  It costs 5% of the cost of the headphones, but they put that toward a future purchase.  I know because I currently have the LCD-2.2, LCD-3 and HE-500 checked-out from them :gs1000smile:

Too busy listening to write a review, but one will be forthcoming....

A bit of snake venom in every cable!  That's the secret!

Now I see why they are called Toxic Cables.

I checked mine out from thecableco.com. Scroll down to the middle of home page for the headphone lending library. Same 5% fee, you have two weeks before having to send them back. I also rented hd800 and wanted T1, but only have a balanced setup.

Informally, a well-driven Stax OII MKI would be closer to the LCD-X than the TH900 (assuming cost is not an object, of course). I hadn't thought about the Stax OII MKI comparison before, but the LCD-X is definitely the closest-sounding to it out of all the Audeze headphones so far. (I previously owned the LCD-2 r1 & r2 and LCD-3, and heard the LCD-XC briefly at RMAF.)

Cables look nice, but shouldn't this belong in a Toxic thread or does HF allow self-promotion by MOTs on any thread?

If i was trying to promote my cables, i would have posted pictures of just the Audez'e cables, which i would be allowed to do within reason, as a forum sponsor, not just an MOT.

I was sharing pictures of my new headphones, just like anyone else.

I think, in recompense for the disruption, we should all get a free cable.  or a snake.  or both.

or, for my own gratification, your impressions of the -XC...

:)

The Stax OII was dark sounding which is why it never worked for me. Does the XC treble roll off?

78 pages and how many have actually heard these for more than an hour? And in a quiet setting?

Anyway, I have had the privilege of listening to both the X & XC for the last 2 weeks as I was tasked with updating the photography for both (it's not yet on the site tho.)

I can say without equivocation that they are a clear and substantial upgrade from my LCD-2.1's. I prefer them to the HE-6's as well. I agree with much of what M.Hero wrote...the X's image much better than the 2's and are far more neutral and extended up top. I never thought of my 2's as congested, but that's how they sound when compared to the X's. The X's are faster. Snare attack is sharp and has no hangover. Cymbal strikes never mush together. They are far less euphonic. I have not yet paired them with a top-line tube amp for an extended, but may do that soon. I spent a little time with them on a WA-5 and that was fantastic. I like that the transducer is accurate allowing me to tune with the electronics rather than the other way around.

Sadly, I have precious little time with the LCD-3's, so I'm not in a position to offer an opinion on that subject. That said, at my meet in Oct, those who have used and owned the 3's were very impressed with the X's

The XC's do a surprisingly good job of mimicking the overall sound signature of the X's but lack the width of the soundstage of the X's. They are a great option for those seeking the Audez'e sound while requiring isolation from the outside world (or those with a family who does not want to listen to your music too.)

As to ease of driving, I spent one whole day processing photos listening to my X's on a Schiit Magni...$99 of solid state surprise. It's rated to give about 1W into the X's load. While I wasn't mistaking it for my RWA, it did a credible job driving the X's. It never felt strained. It never clipped. Dynamics were good on both rock (Stevie Ray Vaughn) and classical (LvB's 5th Piano Concerto). I find that the X's scale nicely with better electronics, but are easy enough to drive that you don't NEED a monster amp (/glares at HE-6's).

In conclusion, it was fun having the entire range of LCD's at he meet. We had LCD2.1 & 2.2, X, XC & 3. In those VERY limiting conditions and with VERY little time with the 2.2 & 3, my initial reaction was that I preferred the X's to the others...especially when driven by FrankI's maxed WA-5 with a killer tube compliment. Now that I have the X's, I long for the $5k I need to get the WA-5.

Happy to answer specific questions.

I do not find the XC dark or rolled off.
