Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 250

Recently purchased these headphones.  My first *real* headphone purchase and was worried about being able to drive them.  They get PLENTY loud from my laptop (Dell XPS 15 L502x).  Mids seem drowned out, drums sound a little tinny, and acoustic guitars seem to have a weird sound at the end of the note, can't quite describe it.  In games there seems to be reverb or something, but I'm used to open headphones so I guess that is why.  Overall I like the sound but am also a little disappointed.

I'm building a PC (mini itx), and my motherboard has a Creative Sound Core3D chip and a MAX97220 DirectDrive headphone amp.  WIll this fare better than my laptop/could it fix any of my problems?  I'm not opposed to getting an external amp/dac if necessary but would prefer not to.

Thanks for any help!

Any amp will sound better than no amp; and likely fill out some of the sound from the 250 Ohm 770s.  Amps do more than just add volume.

I'm not sure I understand where 250 ohms falls on the scale.  Is it safe to assume that my laptop has an amp since they can get really loud, or is 250 ohms still in the range where they can be driven by unamped sources plenty loud, just not optimally?

Your laptop very likely does not have an amp.  I've never seen a laptop that had a built in amp (nor have I ever seen a PC laptop that had decent sound period).

My old Android phone could drive the 250 Ohm DT770s to an ok volume, but they sound like crap overall.  The amp is needed to fill in the sound and drive them to their full potential.

Okay, thanks.  Once I finish my build and can listen to them on the build in sound card + amp, I will report back.  If I'm not happy with the sound, I will need advice on what external equipment to purchase!

The new motherboard mini ITX's audio hardware should do a better job then whatever is built into the laptop.
