Fiio E6 or cheap portable amps to increas mic volume.

Hello HeadFi,

I'm looking to find a way to help my grandmother hear better without using a hearing aid (she refuses to wear them but can't hear unless people are yelling).

Since amps like the Fiio E6 are small, cheap, and contains a battery already, would it be possible to connect a mic to the line in and headphones to line out to increase the volume that way? That way we could talk to her without shouting and she can hear us?

Or would there be some other cheap alternative to use some similar portable set up to produce the desired results.

I was thinking if something like this worked, maybe I could even add a bluetooth receiver at a later point to help her hear the TV without having the neighbors complain about the noise.

I know sound quality won't be great even if this worked but it would be a solution for my family.

If anyone have an E6 or something similar, could you please test it out and let me know if this is something that's possible with the E6?

Thanks for all the help and any suggestions you may have.

This is probably not your solution. A Mic. usually requires a higher impedance and higher gain than a line input  as in a device like the E6 or comparable. You can try it, but I'd wager that the results would be disappointing.

Ok, I didn't know that. Thanks for the help.

I had the same problem with my mom. One thing that I was able to do is get her a cordless phone with a speakerphone in the handset that was loud so at least when I called her we could have an actual conversation.

Does she like music? Get her a DAP with IEMs and see if the IEMs can be a stepping stone to a hearing aid. Maybe she'll get used to having something in her ear that rewards her with music.

Thanks for the suggestion. She doesn't really like music, she just enjoys talking. It is difficult to have a conversation when you have to yell everything you say so that she might hear parts of it. She isn't liking headphones or IEMs. But the idea is to have something she could put on or we could help her put on when we are trying to talk with her.

I know the situation all too well. In person she could never figure out what I was saying, but on the phone she got it. Not hearing well for an older person can amount to sensory deprivation which is not a good thing. My mom used to hear parts of conversation and fill in the blanks using her imagination. Sometimes the results were not amusing.
