How does the Q701 compare to the HD 558?

Posted in the recommendation forum but didn't get many replies, so I'm posting again here because I'd really like some opinions.

A few months ago I bought the sennheiser 558s. I had been interested in the q701s for awhile but didn't have any experience with akg, so i went with the sennheiser's. well recently, i listened to the k271s and really liked the warmer (i guess?) sound, so this got me curious about the q701s again. So really I guess I'm asking if the q701s sound similar to the k271s, and if it doesn't, how does it sound compared to the 558. I'll also be completely honest and say that the lime q701s look so cool, it makes me WANT to like them regardless of how they sound. But reading what people have said about them makes me a little worried about the high trebles. I dont think listing the genres I listen to will help since I listen to nearly everything. For the record, it's not that I'm dissatisfied with the 558s, I'm just really curious about the Q701s. Also, I'm running my headphones through an X Fi titanium HD sound card

You might find a good answer to your question on this thread.

Hey, thanks. I saw the reply, but I'm not concerned with improving the sound of the 558 so much as how the Q701 sounds in comparison. I'm not looking for something to replace the sennheiser's; I'm just wondering if the AKG may sound worse to me based on how I felt about the 558s. If they sound too similar, or if the AKG is too shrill on the high end then there's obviously little point for me to get them.

On a side note, I will consider picking up that amp though. I've been reading good things about it all over.

I own the HD558s and the AKG K242HD the "open" version of the K271 closed headphones.

I would guess the Q701 are better sounding then the K271s.

I think music will sound a little better with the Q701s over the HD558s,

Q701 might be less boring, then the HD558s.

On the following thread, I'm sure there a current Q701 owners who also own or use to own the HD558s.

I'm sure their opinions on the Q701/HD558s would be more valid then mine.

The Q701 sound more cold and lifeless than the 558 but they are a more technical upgrade. The 701 sound more open and airy. The sense of distance is about the same. In some tracks it can seem that the 701 sound maybe 2-3 cm more away but nothing amazing. They are a good headphone! I know what you mean about the looks, I'm a sucker for the lime green!
