Wondering how the HD 558 compares to the Q701?

Few months ago I bought the sennheiser 558s. i've been interested in the q701s for awhile but didn't have any experience with akg, so i went with the sennheiser's. well recently, i listened to the k271s and really liked the warmer (i guess?) sound, so this got me curious about the q701s again. So really I guess I'm asking if the q701s sound similar to the k271s, and if it doesn't, how does it sound compared to the 558. I'll also be completely honest and say that the lime q701s look so cool, it makes me WANT to like them regardless of how they sound. But reading what people have said about them makes me a little worried about the high trebles. I dont think listing the genres I listen to will help since I listen to nearly everything. For the record, it's not that I'm dissatisfied with the 558s, it's just...that lime...

Also, I should add that I dont have a dedicated amp. running my headphones from a creative x fi titanium hd soundcard

Plugging a Schiit Magni, $99, into the RCA outputs on the T-HD (Titanium HD) and plugging the HD558s into the Magni should improve audio detail, at least a little.

Also removing the black rubber tape from inside the HD558s should help with mids, surround sound and treble, at least a little.

Bass might lose a little fullness, but bass detail should still be there.

Oh man, a thread i can participate in!  My old housemate has some 558s he was running on an x-fi and i have q701s i was/am running through an x-fi until i got a o2 amp to go through.  Without the amp (out of the soundcard) the 558s were better.  The Qs didn't really sound that great in general, and had no bass, although they still had great instrument separation.  Getting the amp was a transformation- the Qs were much clearer, and the bass, while still subtle was THERE, and it was really easy to hear bass notes rather than 'blat blat.'  With EQ and amp they're not bass-shy; they'll reproduce what you send them with their own emphasis.  The 558s are better hooked up to the amp too, but it's a relatively subtle change in clarity.

He pulled the foams out of his 558s and was pleased with the change, but i thought i'd rather just use EQ if i wanted that change.

In my experience i would be happy with the 558s as they sit unless i wanted to buy a separate headphone amp at the same time.  I have also run the Qs through my receiver, and while the sound tightened up, the bass was still wacky.
