Need recommendations for AMP + Headphone combination

I recently get a Meridian Explorer as a DAC for my desktop use, also want to buy a open back headphones to take the advantage of high rez music. Right now I am considering Sennheiser HD 650, AKG K712, or Hifiman HE400. I am relatively new to the open back cans. Any advice will be good for choose among those three.

Meridian Explorer is already a DAC and AMP, but I am worried about if it can properly power those headphones since its USB powered. A maybe $200-300 amp will be better? If its just a tiny bit better, I would not spend the extra 200-300.

Heya,

I can't seem to find specs on the internal amplifier of the Meridian. Maybe someone else can spend more time on it and find that info to help you in regards to needing a better amplifier or not, depending on what headphone you choose to go with.

Which headphone you select should be based on preferences.

Tell us how you want it to sound. Neutral? Warm? Bassy? Bright?

Very best,

Thanks for the reply here.

I listen to a lot of styles of music, so I prefer a neutral, uncoloured, detailed sound.

My favourite will be death metal, so a more controlled bass is a plus.

Heya,

In that case, consider:

Beyer DT880

Sennheiser HD600

AudioTechnica AD900X

AKG Q701 / K702

Hifiman HE-400

Sony MA900

Some of these will run fine from your Meridian. Others might require a little more amplification to be at full potential. All of these however are still relatively easy to drive with a solid desktop ampliifef, such as Matrix M-Stage, Schiit Asgard 2, Fiio E09k, Maverick Audio TubeMagic A1, Schiit Magni, JDS Labs O2, etc.

Very best,
