Amp / DAC combo for AKG Q701

Hi guys,

I am new to this higher end of the music headphones etc.

I have just bought a westone 4r (from recent sale on amazon) and a AKG Q701. I currently have an Ultimate ears super fi 5 pro with me.

Can anyone please suggest what DAC / AMP should i get?

I am not very sure of the inputs etc, all i know is that I will definitely plug it to my laptop via USB, to my PS3 and my sony muteki amplifiers which my home system is currently plugged into.

I have read around and found that Matrix M Stage Headphone Amp is really good for Q701 so is the objective 2, but the M Stage is more accessible to me.

If I am getting the M stage i will get the DAC that goes with it and that will cost me around 500 AUD.

I have also read the review for E07K with E09K or E09K with E17 pairs wonderfully for under 300.

What do you guys think?

Have you tried plugging the Q701s into the Sony Muteki?

What is the exact model number of the Sony Muteki system's receiver?

Does the laptop have a S/PDIF optical output?

So your looking to do gaming? music? movies?

I bought it with the speakers... it is muteki str km-5000 i believe.

I have not tried to plug it onto the muteki receiver but it does have headphone output on it. Are receivers output generally sufficient?

My laptop does not have S/PDIF output i believe. I do have a creative Xfi HD soundcard plugged onto the USB though.

I am using it for a music, gaming, movie actually not realy being specific.

Thank you PurpleAngel

Did you try plugging the Q701s into the X-Fi HD, how does it sound?

Having a hard time trying to find the Muteki manual on-line, to see if it has features that can be used, like HDMI or optical input?

Hard to figure out what can process gaming audio (surround sound) with both a laptop and the PS3 and be able to decently drive the Q701s.

With the PS3, you need something with an optical input or maybe HDMI input and that can process headphone surround sound.

A Fiio E17's DAC and amp could be used with both the laptop and PS3, but it does not process headphone surround sound.

E17 plugged into the X-Fi HD (optical output?) might work for the laptop.

Hi purple angel.

I could not find as well prettt hard as iy is rather old sound system I believe around 5 years old.

Ya I did but I nv had any experience before and could not tell what is termed as the eexpected soundoi sshould be hearing from such headphones?

What is the difference betweeen e17 and the e9? They act as a dac? I see the e09 it does have usb input n rca input n headphone amp? Why do I still need to add the e17 or e7 on top? What do they do?

The Fiio E09K is a simple headphone amplifier (analog input normally) with a fairly decent amount of power for driving headphones (up to 600-Ohms). It's all analog.

The E17 is a DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) and a headphone amplifier (up to 300-Ohms) and comes with feature for adjusting the audio signal, E17 has USB, optical & coaxial inputs.

The E07K is a more "basic" E17, only has USB, for a digital input.

When you dock the E17 to the E09K, it allows the E09K to take in a digital audio signal (USB) and run that signal thru the E17 DAC (and DAC only), then to run the audio signal (now analog) to the E09Ks headphone amplifier.

If your using headphones under 300-Ohms, then the E09K is not really needed.

Thank you purple angel for the explanations.

I am still undecided though between the matrix m stage dac and amp which will cost me about 485 for both or should I get the e17 and e09k for 245?

what would you guys recommend me to get? Or should I get some other combo?

Thank you for the feedback!!
