Better Surround Sound

Thread Starter

I own Beyerdynamic DT990 32 Ohm and Audio Technica A700x. I also have the Razer Surround Sound Software and the Xonar U3 which has DolbyHeadphone and Dolby Pro Logic IIx.

My Questions :

How good the above mentioned headphones can get when used in combination with razer/xonar u3 in terms of directional or surround sound ?

Does it make sense to buy the Sennheiser PC 360 to complement the two headphones that i have ? Will it give me a better directional/Surround sound than DT990 and A700x ?

Do you know any other headphone(s) that can give me superb directional/Surround sound when combined with Razer/Xonar U3 ? Sound Quality doesnt matter that much ... just superb directional/surround sound ..

Maybe a better sound card would help over buying new headphones.

I would think (guess) the DT990s are already do a good job of surround sound.

But I dont think that i need an amp for DT990 32 ohm version ? do i ?

can you tell me the difference between Ad700 and A700x in positional gaming ? I am sure they use the same drivers but a700x is closed while AD700 is open. but are they both good in positional audio ?

how would PC360 fit in ? is it comparable to A700x ? should i buy it ?

I believe Beyerdynamic came out with the 32-Ohm version as a way to sell headphones to people who had no interest in buying a headphone amplifier, but the DT990 Premium 32-Ohm does improve with a decent headphone amplifier.

The A700X (& AD700X) is a newer revision of the A700 (AD700) series. So they might be using the same diaphragm inside or a modification of the that diaphragm.

So comparing the original AD700 open headphone to a newer revision A700X closed headphone is not something I have a good answer for.

Which of the two headphones, DT990 Premium 32-Ohm and ATH-A700X do you find better for gaming?

I would assume (best guess) is the PC360 is not that much better, if it is even better(?), for gaming headphone surround sound, over the DT990 Premium 32-ohm.

As the A700X is closed, I would assume the open DT990 & PC360 would be better choices for surround sound.

If you are using a desktop computer, I personally would buy a Creative Sound Blaster Z (SB1500) sound card and plug the DT990 into it for gaming.

Thank you for your Reply.

I have another question:

which one of the following headphones would you buy for extremely accurate positional audio :

Sennheiser PC360

or

Sennheiser HD598

I gather they use the same drivers so shouldn't they be identical ? I read from somewhere that PC360's are specialized for gaming ... what do they mean by that ?

I believe having an integrated mic is part of the "specialized for gaming" label.

The HD598 cost $70 more, plus the cost of an add-on mic.

Personally I like the idea of getting the HD558s, $131.26 and you can get any add-on mic you like.

I checked the prices and on amazon.ca the HD598 is 240 CDN, while on canadacomputers.com the PC360 is 279 CDN ...

I guess taking that into account i would go with the HD598...

Thank you for your help..

Here in the USA the PC360 is selling for equal to 175CDN ( $170) and the HD598 is selling for equal to 247 CDN.

You might want to look around for someone in the USA who sells one of those headphones used and will ship to Canada.

Check Head-Fi "Headphones for Sale" thread or eBay.
