Focal Spirit Classic First Look - Head-Fi TV - Page 13

The classics have a much warmer sound than the auto lines to me . It has a fantastic bass response. Nicely textured. The highs are far more relaxed than the k series. Really easy on the ears but still quite resolving. The bass tightens up incrementally with the quality of amplification . It's almost boomy out of an iPhone but really tight from my zdac and even tighter and more energetic from my Lyr. Great versatile hp . It gets a lot of play even though I've a dozen hps around. Awesome with electronic ,dub , blues , funk and reggae.

Despite having more expensive and better hps, I'll be keeping the focals because of the low impedance . One day the wave player will be here and that will be tough to beat as a mobile set up. Too bad these great hps don't get more love, they are great if a little over priced.

Just snagged a brand new sealed pair of these for $200.00 AUD. Seriously, the best money I have spent on this hobby full stop. The perfect upgrade to my M50X's.

Clamping force is quite ok. I must have a skinny melon.

Sound out of the box with Steely Dan's Gaucho is just outstanding. End game closed backs as far as I'm concerned.

Edit: Looks like this seller on eBay might have a few of them. He's upped the price to $247.00 however but is open to offers in case anybody in AU reads this.

That is an awesome price. It's an under appreciated HP. Nice tone and balance . Works great of of mobiles and scales nicely with amping. Make sure to not put too much power into them. They will buzz to warn you. And NEVER push on the driver. It's crazy thin Mylar . It will break. Congrats on your find . Enjoy

Spent some more time with these today.

Outstanding headphones with one caveat - ergonomics.

Not just applicable to Focal but who the hell at these companies measures the human ear?? Seriously, how hard is it.

The Spirit Classics require a bit of fiddling to get the right fit only for you to have to do it again in say 30 minutes because of the dodgy not quite right fit. They cannot decide if they are over or on ears. They are definitely on ears unless you have just emerged from the womb.

Still, I'm very happy with these. Just been listening to some Porcupine Tree and just phenomenal sound quality. No EQ required full stop.

Quite happy to put up with the fit but if you are monitoring Focal and you ever decide to supply replacement ear pads you might want to make them truly circumaural . Unless they are tuned to be what they presently are I can only wonder what they might sound like if they were truly over ears.

I am blessed with a small head and ears. My complaint is claustrophobia. so sweet but congested sound. I use them as my mobile now. they wait for the geek wave. still a nice pair of hps. lovely bass response and sweet trebe

Absolutely!!

Just nitpicking as we do and for the price I paid I should just STFU.

No, I'd say you're right. Comfort is not nitpicking. Focal went for style points. They are sharp. The next gen will have to adjust to the full sized melon crowd. I believe the fit is the reason this is a two-way conversation .
On a side note, your country is and has been making fantastic music. Check my avatar. Still the best album ever. Also loving Hugo Race in all his iterations. Especially fatalists and then the true spirit stuff is nearly obscene.

I'm listening to Porcupine Tree and Dream Theater ATM. The Classics were made for it - you should check them out. :gs1000smile:

I lived in the same town as porcupine tree for a while. Saw them but never bought their stuff . They do have a nice sound, reminiscent of echo and the bunnymen.

i got these a couple months ago, to use them on the go..sound-wise they are just great. better than any other similar priced headphones i tested.

i wish they sealed better though..when used on an airplane i can barely listen to music.. has anyone tried to do some mod to the pads?

Funny I think the isolation is great likewise sound leakage. Easily beats my HD25s. depends whether they fit over your ears I suppose?

well, although they are not really over-ear headphones, they fit around my ears ok, but the isolation is very poor, i guess because of the pads material..

I have a smaller head and ears so I get good isolation as well. Love the tone on these but want for more clarity. They don't see a lot of use for now but I'm keeping them for the release of the geek wave. They are a bit overpriced for the standards of today's headphones. I'm curious as to what focal has brewing at the skunk works. It's been 2 years since they put out a new hp. They have a lot of feedback to work with. Keep the tone and dynamics and clean it up a little, bigger cups and more breathable or replaceable pads and flatten out the headband like the akg K550. Still this one is pretty good for us with smallish heads
