Any disadvantages to turning source vol to max and 24-bit mode?

I am listening to FLACs on my laptop via Foobar and feeding it through a Magni/Modi combo into my HD 650s.

Am I correct in assuming that I should turn the volume from my computer and Foobar to max and then adjust accordingly via the volume pot on the Magni amp?

Similarly, if I go into the Modi device settings via on my Win7 laptop and choose 24 bit.96 khz mode, would this make the sound quality better over the default 16 bit mode?

If so, are these two scenarios always true? Or are there instances where max source volume and 24-bit mode is NOT ideal for best sound quality?

I had the same question so I tried a few things when I first received my Grace m903.

I found out that 24-bit mode has less noise than the 16-bit mode with a 24-bit device.

Adjusting the PC volume to 100% gave the best results, although I keep my DAC to 86% because I heard some distortion at higher volumes.

Why not test the two modes yourself and pick whichever sounds better to you?

The OS eats bits if the source volume is not set to 100%.  If you're noticing distortion, it could be because of double amping.  A true line-level source will not have an issue with 100% volume in the OS.

Also as far as audio quality go (doesn't apply to mastering/mixing) 24 bit files have absolutely no advantage to 16 bit files unless you can survive 200+db.  I would also recommend getting asio or wasapi add ons for foobar, I use wasapi event and it bypasses anything the OS can do to your audio.  Also if you change the settings on your dac to 24/96k it will have no advantage if your files aren't 24/96k as well.

As an aside, when I look at the "Balance" in the Schiit playback device option menu on my Win7, the default volume for Left channel is set to 100, while the default volume for Right channel is set to 99. Any reason why this is?
