Hi, yep I just read through on the Vali thread. Too exciting before so I just posted here. :D

I quite like the pairing of my Mad Dog 3.0 with my Aune T1. I don't use the built in DAC every time, as I run a sound card into it for gaming purposes. The only other amp that I've used in length with the Mad Dogs was the Schiit Magni. Both pushed the headphones well enough for me. I went with the T1 instead of a Magni/Modi stack for the tube DAC, the price ($109 vs $198), and the fact that it's a single unit. I also feel the T1 looks nicer, but that has no impact on its sound.

Eventually I'll be powering the Alpha Dogs off the T1 as well, once the upgrade program is available.

I don't have mad dogs but I have modded t50rp, the zmf and my aune t1 and maverick a1 both power it well, with the maverick seeming to have a bit more power.  I came close to ordering audiogd 11.32.. wish I could AB test with it at a meetup

sounds great of my my audio-gd nfb 12 dac and vintage sansui 7070 receiver

Is there a portable amp/dac under $200 that is a good choice for the MD's?

I've found some little amps/dacs but I couldn't find any information about a pairing with the Mad Dogs:

govibe petite

govibe martini
ibasso d-zero
ibasso d2+ boa
ibasso d5
ibasso d42
headstage lyrix pro
leckerton uha-4
nuforce icon mobile
Ordnance .25
(Hippo Cricri+)

I will use my Galaxy S4 as source and the above work either with the S2 or S3 and their all under $200. My question is: do they pair well with the MD's?

And what about the Topping D1 mII, I heard there's some pretty good synergy with the MD's, but can it be used on the go with the S4?

I would take the Leckerton and NuForce icon mobile out! They will drive them but not to the levels one would expect (a bit underpowered...)

Thanks for the comment. That leaves me with:

govibe petite

govibe martini
ibasso d-zero
ibasso d2+ boa
ibasso d5
ibasso d42
headstage lyrix pro
Ordnance .25
(Hippo Cricri+)

My search for a good sub-$200 amp/dac fort he MD's is getting quite hopeless...

FWIW, the UHA-6S Mk.II powers them just fine, though recordings that haven't quite fallen prey to the loudness wars might require you to get close to maxing out the volume. I never found myself wanting, though. Most recordings would be much too loud if you maxed out the volume. This was with the 209 opamp, BTW, which was highly recommended to me.

Had this one as well, found them underpowered... Same opamp...

Age difference, perhaps? (In terms of hearing abilities)

Maybe... or maybe I like to crank it up sometimes! ;-)

For "normal" listening, they are Ok and the Leckerton amps are the best mobile amps I've heard/use.

Unfortunately the UHA-6S M.II are a bit out of my price range, isn't the UHA-4 comparable? What about the others on my list?

If you're not in desperate need of a DAC, I'll make a shameless plug for the FiiO E12. Plenty of power, the bass boost adds nice color to the sound (if that's what you prefer) and at about $120 USD it is relatively cost friendly.

I have some reservations with the E12. Though somebody here on the forum wrote that Dan from Mr. Speakers said that the E12 and the MD's pair well, there have been also some posts which say that the don't really match.
