You couldn't hear the 9dB variance of the "normal" frequency response?  It's a change that is greater than swapping the white for black filters.  Odd.

You gotta love bass though with the 8A ;)... Same with the FX850 but I find the bass to be much more controlled and less intrusive than the FX850s than my former 8A... The 8A made the FX850s sound bass light in comparison lmao...

The hugo is a killer DAC. One of my best HP purchases. I agree about the powering, but nothing's perfect.

I personally like the ADL X1, but the FiiO E18 should be for its price a good choice.
Chord Hugo seems to be the category winner, but it looks like there is no other way to charge it, than to carry separate battery charger instead of charging it through USB.
I don’t look for any connection with iDevice or Android. I just need the superb portable USB powered DAC/AMP for my Macbook Pro.

Glad I found this thread. It's an interesting read.  Glad to see so many  other UERM lovers. I loved the comment about appreciating the UERM but enjoying the SE846. I was hoping for a suggestion for a complimentary fun (bassier) CIEM/IEM. Sometime you feel like an engineer and sometimes you just want to groove. All things equal I would probably prefer an IEM. Universal Roxanne? IE800? SE846?

TIA

Though this thread is aimed at higher price tag iems, some lower ones should be mentioned as well.. On my Ibasso HDP R10 the quality difference between my JH16Pro ($1200) and FA-4E XB ($500) is just absolutely minimal. Rumbling bass, great consistency and comparable resolution over the entire range and high treble extension.. Let it in the top performers!

No no. It's not affected in a sense that it still has respectable SQ with the 22ohm OI. Other iems just sounds like total crap with 22ohm OI. UERM especially, as well as IM04.

I wasn't a big fan of Roxanne or IE800. I say all of them have superb bass. Mids, IE800 and SE846 does it a bit better, but for treble, Roxanne beats it all. I guess it's a matter of preference.

846 has unnatural treble.

I agree, listening to my Ety ER4S while my Roxanne's are away, the Ety's absolutely play in the same league with better clarity, speed and treble extension. We are getting ripped off no doubt

Which is sad because the Roxanne treble is rolled off also. I'm not sure why its so hard to have quality/extended treble at these prices when Etymotic nailed it in the beginning.

The Roxanne has Jerry's best treble performance by far. It might come off as unnatural in timbre compared to the ER4 because the spectral decay pattern is different, and has certain, more minor resonance spikes here and there (perhaps less prominent with the CIEM version), but it's still the best of Jerry Harvey's stuff.

It's too bad the Roxanne's bass adjustment knob doesn't set the lowest setting at something closer to neutral. The Roxanne starts at JH13 levels of bass and only goes up --- way up. The JH13 bass level should be set at perhaps 1/3, with the JH16 level at 2/3 of the way, and the basshead insanity at full twist. That's one reason for the loss in apparent clarity over things that are very close to dead neutral like the ER4. But Jerry proclaimed during his talk at Google that he will never, ever tune things to be dead neutral, so don't keep your hopes up.

It's also too bad the ergonomics of the universal Roxanne are silly stupid. It has worse ergonomics than the TF10, and that's saying a lot.

It's triply too bad that some customers have been waiting seven to eight months for the custom Roxanne and still haven't gotten it. That should be completely unacceptable for any company, much less a company as prominent as JHA. I thought their customer service would improve after their upper management musical chairs arrangement, but it seems to be just as poor as ever.

^ good points all around. I think their customer service may be their downfall. Its as bad as ever. I've lost all respect for the company. Now that there is competition as good or better depending on preference, they are doing nothing but hurting their future at least in the consumer market.

All I can say, I will never ever do any business with JHA and their un-etic customer service even if they brought the best-holy cow-awesome-over 9000 good sounding ciems. No way man. I prefer to throw my money in thrash rather than becoming their customer.
