Seeking advice.

Unless there's some sort of delay, I'll be picking up my Fitear MH335DW on the first or second week of January 2014. It'll be my first CIEM of any sort. I don't have any dedicated DAP (too broke to afford one after paying for the CIEM + cable), so my source will be my iPhone or desktop setup, but I'll probably be buying a portable amp in the near future.

I'm sure chaps at Jaben will have a long list of portable source/amp units to recommend me the day I pick up the CIEMs, but I figured it'd be best to get advice from Head-Fi regulars first, since I've read that the Fitears are supposedly very sensitive and picky about amplification.

Any recommendations for a suitable portable amp (or Amp-DAC combo unit) that I can use with the smartphone? Ideally, I'd like it to be able to run on USB-bus power as well (charging while playing) so that I can use from a laptop when I'm out.

Thanks.

I went for upgrading DAP (RWAK120-B/Intruder) before upgrading IEMs (Shure SE535) to fitear MH335DW.   I must say how impressed I am with sound of the 335's straight out my Iphone 5.    Might have delayed DAP purchase for a while if had done it other way around (might :) )........hopefully you too will be pleasantly surprised with the good sound so can take time with DAP trials now so many new ones are being released.

Meant to add - I got a Vamp Verza for my Father to pair with his Ipod classic and he has been very happy with results.  Jaben (HK) has a trial unit you can try with your smartphone,

Yup. I just got the AK10 for about $200, and am satisfied. It's a perfect solution for iems. A high quality WM8710 with a amp with >1 ohm oi. Sound quality might not be summit fi or $400 level, but it's really good, especially for what it is.

AK10 works well with iems. I feel that they were designed for iems in the first place. Good match with UERM and great portability.

Hmm this thread has been dead for a while. But still.

Has anyone heard the new JH or Fitears or UM? I feel like many companies are also offering universal versions for their custom iems.

Anybody able to compare SE846 with UERM? I currently own UERMs, but searching for some equal sounding (neutral) universals.. Any tips?

Yup. They should be able to make a custom cable balanced.

Sorry for necro, just saw this thread and am going through it.

Yep! Here's the one I had made for my UERM. Didn't cost much.

Why not reshell your uerm into a universal?

Never thought this service is somehow available by UE? .. The idea is to keep the UERM for work (studio work on the go) and have some adequate quality universals for general listening (also work related) in a gym, during sports etc, which is more comfortable (easiest and fastest to put on/off, sweating.. etc).

UE doesn't offer it, but you can get them reshelled by UM. UM will tune the UERM so that it sounds like the ciem version.
